Tae Kwon Do Question

As someone stated before in the thread - it does depend on your area....

Here the average Tae Kwon Do school can charge anywhere from $100-$150 per month when you sign up. And that doesn't usually include the intial sign up fee. ($200 or more depending on length). This usually includes 2-3 classes per week...

DD8 has been taking Tang Soo Do going on three years now. Where we use to live classes were $85 per month with no contract and no initial fee.

But, here we had to sign up for a year ($200) and now pay $100 a month for 2-3 days per week.

So... it is all relative. :) It depends mostly on how well you like the school and how experienced the instructors are.

Oh, and some schools do charge a fee for advancement testing..... Ours does.

Dh is into it and paid 1200/year. If you go monthly it's $125.00. Don't know how families with multiple children taking can afford that:scared1:

Our whole family.... DH, me, DS10 &DD8 signed up at the end of Dec. We pay $160/month on a 6 month contract. We take 2 classes per week and they are 30 minute classes. We are to test for our yellow belt Feb 22. Sometimes we are the only ones in the class others there may be 7-8. I like that we aren't locked into a specific class day/time. If we miss the early Tues class we can go to the late class that day or whatever day fits in. My DN takes at a different place and he is locked into specific days/times.

We were just asked if we want to join the Leadership Program. Naive me didn't give any thought to it being more $$$$. Now I am wondering if we were asked just because it is more $$$ for them? :confused3

It's about killing DH and I but we do love it. I consider it a challenge and I want that Black Belt so bad I can taste it. Doesn't hurt that the instructor isn't hard on the eyes.

My sons is 75 a month and one class per week!!!

Ok, I don't feel so bad from our Tae Kwon Do days now. We paid $45/month for the first child and reduced per child after that. We ended up paying $95/month for all 3 kids, total and then it was $77/month after DS14 got his black belt. Once you got your black belt there were not more fees unless you took a class. You were expected to help in the gym once you got a black belt and that was your 'fee'. Classes were twice a week with frequent open gyms on Saturdays. We did not have to sign any contracts.

Testing, colored belts were $35, black belt was $350 which came with an official certification from Korea.

My DS is a 1st degree Black Belt and has been with the same instructor since the beginning. The classes are three nights a week and it's $45.00 per month.

Testing is $50.00 per test. There are no contracts required and the first month is free while deciding if you want to make the commitment to continue with Tae Kwan Do.

We pay $70pp/month 2 classes per week. Black Belt is $600. DD is testing in June!:scared1:

Good luck to your DD! I'm testing for my black belt starting this week, so I totally know the pressure and nerves she must be feeling. :scared:

This won't happen, but what if she somehow fails her exam? Do you get your money back? $600 seems like far too steep of a price to pay. :sad2:

They do it a little different in our school. You are only allowed to test if you have proven yourself ready, meaning you have shown you have all the skills. So by the time the bb test comes around you can only fail if you give up during the test.
Our tests run 2 concurrent days. Friday night is 6 hours (closed test). Saturday is around 4 hours but is open to friends and family.

Good luck to you!

At DS's school they get a colored stripe on their belt as the progress through the level. Once he gets his third stripe that means his teacher feels that he is ready to test. After just going through his first testing I'm sure that he doesn't give out that third stripe until they can past their testing - unless of course they quit in the middle of the test.
