Tacky Tipping

I am a server/training coordinator at a local restaurant and if I get good service I often give out gift certificates to my restaurant to the servers with their tip. But I've never given them just the certificates.

I would not leave a tip like that but, at the same time if those coupons are worth the amount of the tip it would be the same thing as leaving a money tip. I would look at it that way. Of course I like to eat at burger king.

Whoppers aren't cheap anymore.

I wouldn't leave Burger King coupons, but if I received poor service from the waitress (that I was certain was the fault of the waitress and not someone else) and/or she had a bad attitude - I would not hestitate to leave no tip at all..

If I receive good service, I tip quite well.. However, I will not tip in places like Dunkin Donuts; McDonald's; when I pick up an order; or things of that nature.. If something is delivered, of course I will tip..

I know this is off topic, but I have been wondering this for a while now. If we order something to go at a nicer sit down restaurant, not a fast food place, do all of you tip and if so, what percentage. I have struggled with this and I would love other opinions.

As I said earleir, I work at a fairly nice restaurant and we average 19-20%. Management keeps track of and posts our tip pecentages.

I have had the same experiences as PaintNolish. I have worked in three separate restaurants. At all three I was required to report a certain percentage of my sales in tips. That was how it was figured to tax me. That means if I was stiffed, I still paid taxes on what should have been.

At the last restaurant I worked at, we also had tip out to the bartender and bussers. We tipped based on 1% of our sales. Even if I bussed my own tables and never sold a drink from the bar. There would be times when they would get more than I would for my tables.

It's not always tied to service either. A lot of people would tell me I did a great job and then would tip next to nothing or nothing. A lot of people will go out to eat when they do not have the money. The last restaurant I worked at told us not to expect to be tipped by our tables.

Here's the clincher: a restaurant is not required to pay servers minimum wage. All three paid me $2.13/hr. They expect your tips to make up the rest. Even after telling you that guests are not required to tip.

Yep. Ouch. The "verbal tip" is usually the kiss of death! It is disheartening when they are so pleased with everything than leave a poor tip!

Yes...I make $4.50 an hour. On weekend nights, it is usually made up for but not so much on lunches (which most places require you to work a set minimum).
