Table service meals and diet requests

Do we really need to request sugar free and/or low fat options in advance for table service meals (including buffets)? It seems like given today's common health needs that these two requests are so frequent that they would simply have options available all the time?

In buffets I go more for the veges and fruits and try to find fish and chicken. Again when I go on vacation I don't watch what I eat 100%, again I am on vacation!
I'd check all the menus before you go and try to go to restaurants that have leaner meats and salads.

It seems to me that the table-service restaurants always have at least one sugar-free or low-fat option, but it's generally something like dry grilled chicken or a salad. If that's ok, then there's no reason to make a request. However, if you're going to want something different, you may need to request ahead of time. Some restaurants will accomodate special requests once you're there; some will only make accomodations for religious reasons or allergies.

I had a great experience a few years ago at the Crystal Palace in the MK- my cousin keeps kosher, and my father is on a low-carb diet. When we mentioned this to our waiter, he brought out the chef, who offered to make my cousin a special dish in her own seperate cookware, and personally took my father on a tour of the buffet, pointing out what he could and could not eat. So, I highly recommend CP if you're on a special diet.

What I have seen at WDW buffets for guests with food allergies is the chef will come out and show them what foods they can eat and which they cannot.

I am a diabetic type 2 and Crystal Palace was a great place to behave in.....I tried to have a little of the carb section and kept to the salmon and veggies and the prime rib....it was all excellent and I tested really good that evening too.....For dessert I had some sugar free items and also fresh fruit (which is high in natural sugars anyways).....but remember alot of this you walk off in Disney....
I am anxious to go back in a few more weeks.....:cool1:

Thanks for the feedback thus far! Our main diet consideration in our group is for my mother who had a gastric bypass in the spring. Her main concern is that she have sugar-free options. With this type of procedure she has to watch her sugar intake very closely! Since her stomach is now the size of a walnut sugar goes right through her and make her miserable. The rest of us will suspend our healthy lifestyles while on vacation so there's no worries there!

I can relate to your concerns. I had a gastric bypass over 3 years ago and I dump when I have too many sugars. My wife and I are going to WDW for 10 days; leaving Thursday night on a redeye from Seattle. I have already contacted the dining dept. regarding all of our ADR's and was advised to ask for the chef when we were seated. I am still not sure about how the counter service is going to work, however. Hope this helps some. Good luck!
