My family and I recently ate at the T-Rex Cafe in Kansas City and I thought since one is getting ready to open in Downtown Disney that some people might like to know what it was like. We made sure to take lots of pictures of the restaurant so you can get a good idea of what it will look like when it finally opens. Here's who ate with us:
Me-Gina
Billy-DH
Will-DS, 2
Gemma-DD, 8 months

My sister, Amanda
BIL, Clint
Sam, my nephew, 6
Sophie, my niece, 3

We arrived around 11:00 a.m. I was concerned that we would have a long wait so we tried to get there as soon as they opened. Luckily, we walked right in.

This is the dino that greets you when you walk in. He's huge!
We had to shuttle Will and Sophie away from this dinosaur very quickly. They both burst into tears when they saw him. The picture doesn't really show how big and scary it is. Remember this if you have little kids. (My sister wanted me to add this..I had totally forgot this even happened!)

Every room had a theme with different dinosaurs in it. These dinos move and make noise. My son, who has a dinosaur room at home, was very nervous around these dinosaurs. He is a tough kid too. Nothing at WDW scares him, but this was a little intense. We got a table in the "Lava" or "Volcano" room. About every 15 minutes thunder and lightening would start and the volcano right behind our table would erupt. Will did not like this at all. He was very frightened by it, and this is a kid that actually likes thunder! :confused3 This was a cool location to sit if you have older kids, but the little ones might get a little scared.

The dinosaur right by our table!

Around the bar also looked like a cool place to sit. It was under a huge octopus and every once in a while it's tentacles would sway around. Pretty neat, or gross, depending how you look at it. There was a very neat jellyfish table. I waited until the party sitting there left so I could take a picture of it.

Kind of a dark picture of the octopus.

Talk about sensory overload here! It was so noisy and exciting, we could barely concentrate on the menu. The kids menu is pretty basic; most meals ran about $5.99 and came with a drink. Will ordered the chicken nugget meal with fries. The fries were waffle fries, and for some reason they cost 50 cents more. They were really good though. Will ate every bit of his meal, so I consider it money well spent.

Sam and Sophie both got the pizza meals. Sam got cheese and Sophie got pepperoni. I tried Sophie's and it was a pretty decent pizza, almost exactly like one you would get at WDW. Not great, but not bad.

We decided to get two appetizers and then the husbands and wives would each split an entree. I'm so glad we did this because the portions were HUGE. We started off with the monster nachos and the onion rings. These nachos were actually really good with a ton of toppings. There was a lot of ground beef and black beans. The only thing that would have made it better is if they would have thrown some jalapenos on it, but you can't have everything!

The onion rings were pretty standard but also good. They were served with a homemade tasting ranch and a barbecue ranch dipping sauce. Will loved these and so did Sophie.

My crazy husband and the onion rings.

Billy and I split a Cobb salad. It had lots of bacon, chicken and blue cheese on it.It was very good but the bread they served with it was gross. Dry with a very strong rosemary flavor. They very nicely split it for us. This is a picture of the half salad! I couldn't finish it.

Amanda and Clint got a Asian Chicken salad. They really enjoyed it, but again they could barely finish it after the humongous appetizers.

We couldn't handle dessert. We all took a spin through the gift shop, and you were able to buy the plates the kids meals came on, so we grabbed one of those. At $2.99, this was a cheap and good souvenir.

Dexter the Dino was walking around. He's OK, but after spending a week at WDW he's kind of a let down. Will was excited to see him though.

All in all, we had a good experience. The food was fresh and good, no complaints. I'm not sure if I would go here while I was at WDW though. There are so many other places to eat at. But I wouldn't go to the Rainforest Cafe at WDW either. It just seems very un-Disney to me, and while I"m at WDW I want to be immersed in Disney stuff. If you have a dinosaur fanatic, by all means go! I think it will be a good addition to DTD.

Awesome review :thumbsup2 Thanks for posting it. Super excited to try this place when we are at wdw next year. Looks like fun.

Great Review. We were hoping TRex in DTD would've been open last month when we were there-- the outside sign was finished but overall very much under construction even after 2 years. It must take ALOT to construct one of these!definately going to hit my ADR list in June 09!

thanks for the photos! My son really liked checking them out. Anybody know when the one in WDW is set to open?

Thank you for sharing that!

I can tell you now I will not be eating there. I am terrified of dinosaurs. I will not ride the Universe of Energy. I will not ride Dinosaur.

I had a bad Jurassic Park experience.

:lmao:

Thanks for sharing the review and pictures? Where exactly in KC is the restaurant located? My boyfriend's family is from Overland Park and no one seems to know where it was when we asked...

Oh! Thanks for this info...we'll have to look into it next time we're there!

crap I was just there with a group of Girl Scouts. We went to the Great Wolf Lodge and they would have LOVED this place. Wish I knew it was there. Well next time we get some furniture I know we are going there with the kiddies.

Thanks!

It was so thoughtful of you to do this review and you wrote it so well! Your pictures really give us the feeling of what the new DTD restaurant will be like. Thank you so much for taking the time to post this. :)

thank you for doing this review. Yes we want to go when it opens at DTD!

Do you have a picture of the kids plate you bought?

It's cute and says T-Rex Cafe in big letters with a picture of Dexter on it. If you want, they can sell them to you at the table. They also have a big display of them in the gift shop.

Funny, we spent my DD's 2nd birthday at T-Rex in KC because she loves dinosaurs. They sat us at the exact same table you're pictured at. She was completely terrified the whole time we were there. She kept saying that Cera and Ducky (from the Land Before Time) were giong to "Get you!" DH and I loved the place, but she wouldn't even think about eating, so we wound up getting it to go. She did enjoy building her own dinosaur in the Build a Dino area though. (Owned by Build a Bear for those who've never heard of it.) Anyway, good pictures. We only took one, in the middle of the thunderstorm part, when DD looks like she'd much rather melt into the floor than eat her dinner.

thats funny when we were there last month we were at THAT same table I see the poster above me was at that table too maybe they know a DIS reader when they see one.
