As a long time owner of many different types of aquaria, I can tell you that this happens more than yuo would think. In movies it is always the glass that breaks, but that simply never happens in real life. The pressure is all on the joints and seals. Those seals do not last forever. They break down. The salt in the water naturally breaks down these chemicals. They can last years, but eventually all aquaria will fail. This probably was just a mistake years ago when this one was built. I'd guess too little epoxy was used here and eventually a small portion of it stopped being able to hold the water, but the wast majority of it held, which probably allowed them to save teh fish. Great job on savinf the fish btw. It will not be too hard to fix. A tank manufacturer will come is and remove the old seals, re-seal it and have it up and running in a couple of days.
