SWS hotels

While we were on the SWS tour we ate lunch at El Tovar. We were there in June and it was unseasonablely hot. The temperature was almost 100 at the rim so it was nice to get out of the noonday sun. It is much easier to get into the dining room for lunch. No reservation for lunch is needed. For dinner you need an reservation. The guides on our tour were able to get people, who wanted to eat there, a same day reservation. I don't know if that is something they can do all the time. We ate dinner later that day at Bright Angel.

On a later trip we stayed at El Tovar and ate dinner there. It is very nice but very expensive and service, while great, was slow. We did eat lunch one day at the Maswik pizza pub and the pizza was really good. It is just a short walk from the rim behind Bright Angel. They also have a nice cafeteria. We ate breakfast there.

Also there is the Arizona steakhouse. It is in the Bright Angel but operates separately. It does not take reservations so there can be a long wait.

One thing we noticed while on the tour is that almost all the tours drop you off near Bright Angel. There is a restaurant and a snack bar in Bright Angel. Since it is the first place, many people just ran in there to eat. By contrast, El Tovar for lunch was not very busy at all.

The Grand Canyon lodging website has the menus for all the restaurants. I don't know how often they update them but when we were there they were very accurate.
