Switching resorts for discount?

Usually we avoid the peak season, but next year the only time we have available to go is mid March. Had my heart set on WL, but peak rates there are a little too much $. So, if we book POR and later a discount comes up for our dates, is it hard to switch to WL if available? Do we have to cancel POR first and risking not having a room at either? Can we have a reservation at each and just wait to cancel the one we don't want?

2014 rates aren't out yet, so until they are we won't know for sure. If you do decide to switch resorts, then call reservations to have them make the switch so that you don't lose both reservations.

By the time my 45 days comes up I usually have two reservations for some reason or another. I just call and they move my deposit over to one one of them and cancel the other.

You could have a reservation at each but if WL is truly a no go w/o a discount there's probably no point to making a second reservation there to hold the room. Disney won't offer a discount for a sold out hotel and discounted rooms come out of a different inventory anyways. So even if the discount happens, there would have to be availability in the discounted room inventory for a CM to be able to apply it to your reservation.

from my personal experience i suggest you do it over the phone. for me it was super easy. we had booked pofq for later this month back in february then a better rate came up for cbr that (although i prefer pofq) i'm traveling with family coming from out of state who have the additional expenses of flying etc and the savings for the switch were significant enough that we made the switch. i did it over the phone in just a few minutes and they automatically applied my deposit from the first booking and the new discount plus the confirmation number didn't change so all our adrs were still linked.

It is not appropriate to make two reservations knowing the one is false, and it is not needed. (If enough people did this, no discounts would ever become available!) If they offer a discount, it is becuase too many rooms are not reserved, so there is having a reservation wasn't necessary! So, reserve the lesser priced resort and watch the news for discounts. As soon as one comes available you will have time to make the switch and Disney is happy to accommodate such changes! As someone else said, a call is best.

The CM should be able to modify your existing reservation to reflect the resort change and discount, should a discount come out. The only time one would have to be cancelled and the other booked is if you are changing reservation types (i.e., room only to a package or package to room only). As the pp said, it doesn't make sense to make a reservation at the WL if it's not doable without a discount as having a reservation already in place does not guarantee a discount can be applied. Not all resorts/room types are offered with a discount and there has to be availability under that discount in order to take advantage of it.

So I should reserve the resort I can afford and if a discount comes out for WL just call. If there is availability it's easy to transfer my existing deposit over to the new resort. I see there is no need to make two reservations - makes sense. Thanks!

Yes, it's easy! Calling the reservation line is the easiest way to make the switch if a discount becomes available allowing you to stay at WL. We've done it before and it was very simple. It doesn't affect your dining either.

We switched from Art of Animation to Port Orleans Riverside in a royal room when free dining came out for September. The POR package was cheaper than the AoA one. All I had to do was call and request the change. Very easy and the deposit transferred to the new reservation with no problem.
