Sorry, I know I’ve seen this but can’t find the thread. I own GFV and AKL.
I am going to book a one bedroom GFV lake view in September or October. If the same room remains available at 7 month, can I switch my reservation to use AKL points instead? Or do I need to just cancel and rebook. There will be no borrowed points involve.
And while I am asking old questions, anyone know off the top of their head the odds of GFV one bedroom lake view being available at 7 months?

You can modify the reservation at 7 months but sometimes, the contract will remain locked and it will not allow you to swap out the points.

The only exception to this that I have found when it is locked, is that if the non home resort has banked points...once I check it to be used, the system will pull those if there are still rooms.

What I will usually do is check whether the contract shows up locked by pretending to modify a few days ahead of time, I simply don’t finish it.

Then at 7 months, if it was locked, I book new at 8 am for as many days as I can, and then I modify the home resort trip to free them up. Sometimes, I have gotten the entire stay and sometimes I have not. In the end, if I had two different trips, I just had MS combine them and for some reason, it seems they were able to get around that.

As to odds for late Sep to early Oct in a VGF 1BR when reserving 7-months out, you should currently assume they are low. Oct 1 begins the WDW 50th anniversary and time right around Oct 1 will likely be near impossible to get, e.g.,for most rooms, it actually booked up full faster at 11-months out than rooms have ever done for NYE, the usual highest demand night of the year..
