I was going to bring my nephew, niece and 7 yr old daughter on a surprise trip this year. My nephew and niece have never been. We were trying to go the end of August but just can't make it work. School starts on the 24th and the week before has a high crowd rating. Just can't make sense this trip. I'm also really trying to watch the refurbishments and want to dodge the HM and SM refurbs (this will probably be their only trip for years). So I found out they will be visiting here in utah the first and second week of May. I'm thinking of surprising them and all my research seems to point to that being a great week to go crowd wise (we will go Monday to Friday, always week days). Also the only big refurbishments appear to be PP, Matterhorn and Soarin. We can live without those and can hit PP on the Friday.

Anybody that's gone that time in May give me some insight on how that time of year is? I'm paying a fortune for this trip and really want to choose right. Thanks!

You might want to avoid Tinker Bell marathon weekend if you're switching to avoid crowds. It starts on a Thursday and will possibly carry over through Monday. It's the first year in May, the first DL race weekend in May and it's not a 3 day weekend, so crowds aren't totally predictable, but race weekends are popular.

I don't know what your barometer is for a big refurb, but the weeks before Memorial Day there will be refurbs lasting from a few days to a week. Expect those to be announced only a few weeks out. And sometimes the dates shift. It's kind of a crap shoot, but the good news is that anything that has had a refurb already this year is probably safe.

I was there last year from May 10-15. Crowds were light to moderate, I thought it was a great time to visit. The only down side was a freak heat wave with triple digit temps, but we still had a wonderful time.

Triple heat digits? :faint:
Time pull out the big misters. Not talking men either. Lol

On a side note: I have been meaning to ask, is calpie any relation to a moon pie, magpie or cow pie? ;) No, really.

Do they really announce refurbishments less then two months out like that. Makes it nearly impossible to plan. If certain rides were down we would reschedule. We are looking at May 4 to the 8th and it looks like the marathon is from the 7-10th. Does that mean Thursday and Friday that week will be horrible?

Yes, it will be busy!

Yes on the cow pie! I have my siblings to thank for the awesome nickname:)

Oh my! ;) Moon pies are far tastier though. Lol
Those darn sibs. If ye would like any help with coming up with any nick names for them let me know. :)

We are going May 17-22.

All of the major refurbs are supposed to be done by then (fingers crossed).

It will be right before the big 60th anniversary, so we're betting that a lot of people will hold off visiting until that officially starts on May 22. In addition, most kids are still in school and there's only one grad night scheduled that week.

We will probably end up missing all the 60th anniversary stuff (unless we luck out with a sneak preview) and there's the possibility that some refurbs, such as Matterhorn and Soarin, don't finish as scheduled (although you'd think they'd bend over backwards to have these done on schedule or at least a few days before the 22nd).

We are going the same dates as well. And I am hoping everything you said is correct!

I hate to say this, but if there's only one grad night scheduled, that's a good indication that they plan to have some kind of media and possibly a CM preview. You might want to plan on DL being closed on the 21st or at least closing early. It's also the last week that the So Cal offer is valid, so there's usually an uptick of people who still have a day left on their tickets.
