Switching from Managed Account to own MDE (i.e. kids growing up!)

Back in 2016, my nieces took a trip to WDW. At that time, their grandma set up a MDE account and added both girls to her account (so she managed their accounts) to purchase their tickets, etc.

Fast forward to this year. Both girls are young adults and returning for another trip, this time with their mother. They want to use their previous accounts so they can re-use their old magic bands. It would be easier in the long run for them to have their own accounts they each manage themselves rather than bugging their grandma all the time (and having emails go to their grandma, etc).

I'm helping them sort it out and first thing I did was ask grandma for access to her MDE account (i.e. change the password and give me the new one). Grandma is not planning a WDW trip anytime in the near future. I figured this is easiest so I can just go in and do whatever needs to be done and avoid hassling Grandma.

My plan is to create a new MDE account for each girl tied to each girl's personal email addresses. I want to use that to take control of their existing Disney identities (so they can re-use their old magic bands).

Is there any way to handle this online or will we have to call IT?

Once you've created their new MDE accounts, log on to Grandma's account and go to her Family & Friends list. For each of the girls profiles that grandma manages, click 'Update' and then 'Invite to Connect'. Enter the email address used to create their own MDE account and then click 'Yes'. You will need to log on to each of the girls accounts and approve the friend request. Once approved, any MagicBands, tickets, etc. that were previously controlled by grandmas account should transfer over to their own account.

From the account they are currently on (Grandma's) you should be able to just send them a request to connect to their own personal email addresses. Go to friends and family, and they currently would show as "plans managed my me". Select the family member and click the invite to connect envelope and enter their email address.

Once they accept the invite they will set up their own account and everything associated with their identify should automatically transfer. The prior account manger (Grandma) will still have them in her friends and family list, but no longer control their plans exclusively.

If there is a problem with accepting the invitation, then you will need to call IT help and they will be able to fix it and get their existing magic bands transferred to their new accounts.

I ended up calling because DD and I had dining and fast passes already set for our upcoming trip. She linked everything for me. It was pretty painless, thank goodness, because I feared I'd be on the phone forever.
I think it would have been easier for me to do myself if we hadn't already had plans linked - not sure.

Oh good. This sounds easier than I feared. Will give it a try once I get the password from their grandma :)
