Swimming in Jan? How important to you?

We're going to WDW in Jan '02. Swimming is important to me. Do we stand a chance? What about renting a boat? Too cold? I'm talkin' late Jan here, but still...

We have been in Dec. and Jan. several times. Honestly, we have never been able to swim on those trips. We (especially my husband) like it to be HOT outside (not just kind of warm) if we are going to swim. Yes, the pools are heated - but not enough for us to really enjoy being in the water. It doesn't really matter to us, though. There is so much other stuff to do that we probably wouldn't have time to swim anyway! However, if I had my heart set on swimming, or if I was going with somebody (like my sister) who loves to swim - I would probably go another time of year. Of course, if you are tougher than we are about being chilly, you might be just fine swimming at that time of year. I know lots of people do. We have also been in October and May and we have enjoyed the pools and the water parks on those trips.

I've fried in December and February, May and September, frozen in December, January, and May. You pays your money and takes your chances. Last February at Coronado, I don't believe either the main pool or the quiet pool nearest our room was heated - everyone was in the hot tub. One more reason I didn't like Coronado.

We always swim in January. Even this past January when we wore winter coats and gloves to the parks almost every day. The pools are heated and great. Just make sure you have your key handy and can run quickly to your room when you get out of the pool. It wouldn't be a vacation if you couldn't swim. However, I must admit that in the summer if it is hotter than 90 degrees, I feel it is to hot to bother going to a pool. Just stay in the air conditioning. Don't like it hot. The other nice thing about going when it is cold, you can walk on every water ride, over and over and over.

Whoa! Now see I'm one of those whimpy people that wouldn't get on the water ride unless it was major hot out. I mean, what do you do when you're all soaking wet, trudging around the parks??

I think January is way too cold to swim. It's great as far as crowds and you'll get a lot done without sweating to death. January is a good time to go. It gets very cold, though. I'm from south Florida and couldn't care less about the swimming.

We always swim in January and the first week in Feb. The pools are heated so it's not the swimming that will get you if it's cold, it's the getting out of the pool! :D

Our standard trip times are during Jan through the first week of Feb. We have been approximately 7 times during this time period and have been able to swim at some point during all of them. One time it was unseasonably hot (high 80s-low90s) and the pool was warm enough that it didn't cool us off! Yuck!

To Blue, Dear

We don't get wet much on the water rides. We put on a disposible poncho, roll our pants up to our knees and quickly put on the water shoes I carry in the backpack. Backpack is plastic so it doesn't matter if it gets wet, but we just stick it under the poncho we have on. Of course I look pregnant like that, but , oh well. We usually ride each water ride several times in a row and then change our shoes. Really, most January's it is around 75 to 80 during mid day when we have been at WDW. This past January was the exception. I hope this January will not be as cold.

Honestly, Blue, Dear, I think we were separated at birth. I was just sitting here pondering whether or not we'd be able to swim during OUR trip in January. That, plus the BLU DEAR license plate thing...... Too bad we're going to miss each other by a week. I hope we BOTH get swimmable weather in January!!

XOX

We went last year in Dec. during the cold snap. My wife and son were in the pool everyday. The steam was just rolling off the pool. They said it was great. A good thing to do is get a blanket and have someone who isn't swimming put it in the dryer. Go get it out right before you decide to get out of the pool. That way you will be warm on the walk back to your room. I will say I never seen my wife and son run so fast back to the room. We had a great time. Don't let the weather affect your trip. Take a cool dip!!

The dryer idea was good! Too bad neither one of us will want to run to the laundry to get the warm blankie! *L* Who knows, maybe if I'm out there by myself I can talk husband into getting me one. *s*

I figure if I'm brave enough to trek out there in the cold to go swimming then boating won't be a prob. I'll just put on a sweatshirt and hope not to get splashed. :)

What about water parks? Anybody do them in January??? I have been lurking here a while and our family thinks swimming=vacation so it is important for us to swim during our Jan visit.

Whoa, it would have to be pretty warm for me to do the waterparks. If we run into a warm spell - I'd definately go. They say the water is heated but there's too much running from place to place, you know?

Also, winter season is when they do their annual maintenance so at least one will be closed - I think in Jan it might be River Country, not sure though.

Usually in January Blizzard Beach and River Country are closed. We always go to Typhoon Lagoon. It was closed all but the last day we were there this past January. It warmed up into the 60's and they opened the TL. The kids were so excited. It wouldn't have been the same not being able to go. Wish we could see BB once.

When we were there a few years ago it was Sept. we were staying at the All Star Music and we went swimming at night.......brrrr I was cold the pool wasnt heated enough for Sept. it was a little chilly at night then. Im going this Dec and I may just try a swim anyway brrrrrr or not.:D
