I'm going on my first DCL trip soon and just read that swim goggles are not allowed in the pools. Why is that?

I wasn't aware of this either. My kids wore them in the pools all the time at the end of October. There were plenty of lifeguards monitoring the situation and no one ever said a word.

Does it specifically say goggles? Or could they mean snorkel masks or something? Maybe it's something new...

Someone wrote in some months back and the reply was that they meant swim masks.

Since they actually sell swim goggles on the ships it would be a bit silly to not allow them.

Here's what it says on the website:

Please note that snorkel equipment and swim goggles are not permitted in pools, hot tubs or water-play areas.

Yes, but when poolside attendants have been questioned about this, they say "swim goggles" means dive masks (ones that seal around your nose). The little swim goggles that just cover your eyes are permitted.

Just wanted to inform people what the actual website said in my last posts.

Thanks for the clarification! It's good news that swim googles are ok.

I was told if they have the nose covered then its not allowed. If they just cover your eyes then you're good. Some people get water in them and inhale water and it could become a drowning hazard. Many pools in my area have the same rules.

Swim goggles are perfectly fine as stated above as its only the nose covering goggles that are not permitted

I never notice the restriction, and I've used a snorkel and prescription mask in the adult pool without any hassle. I swim in the morning for exercise, when there aren't many people around, usually only other lap swimmers in the pool.

Conversely, I understand restricting snorkels in the other pools. It's already crowded, with lots of splashing and dunking. I know how to clear my snorkel tube or mask if water gets in, but don't know if most kids do. And there's alawys those freak accidents - my neighbor's grandaughter lost a baby tooth when someone charged into her snorkel during some Marco Polo at the neighborhood pool.

A dive mask presents a drowning hazard? I'd be interested in seeing the statistics on that. Sounds like a made up problem to me.

I don't doubt that some pools made a rule, I just doubt that the rule makes any sense.

FWIW while we were snorkeling on CC DS got an incredibly leaky mask. He couldn't deal with it at all, and finally I swapped with him and wow was it leaky. It constantly filled with water in the nose region, which could be inhaled and cause problems. It was making me panicky, even though I'm an adult. I could SEE how freaked out my son was getting, and if he had been younger he could easily have started hyperventilating and breathing in that water. Not what you think of when you think drowning, but not a good thing to be happening all the same, that's for sure.

Same rules here in Minnesota....

With all the chlorine and pee in the pools, goggles should be mandatory not banned :rotfl2: just sayin...

That is a definite benefit. Since I started wearing the mask, I no longer have frequent sinus infections. A gentleman at my pool wears a nose clip for the same reason.

Never thought about nose clips. Breathing in through the nose while wearing a mask would be next to impossible but the kayak clip would work just fine and probably keep the nannies at bay.
