is my sister having me on that you can't take sweeties into America? She swears they are clamping down on bringing any food or drink in. Now I understand before you get on the plane -we live in an age where an explosive device could be in anything but she says the problem is when you arrive and they find your food. I know you can't take some fresh food in (specially fruit and veggies) but I'v never heard of Colorado beetle infesting Werthers before

when you arrive and they find your food

Sorry it's not obvious from the first post, but when she says "Find your Food" did she declare it?

As I know if you don't declare your food and they find it, they are not going to be happy bunnies and will take it away.

So I think if you just fill out the form correctly and the packet is sealed they should be okay.

As I brought in about 4 boxes of Barney bears on my last trip (Nov) and apart from a brief chat about what they were it was fine.

I always take a huge box of cadbury's in my suitcase to post to my American friend once i'm there - I always put on the customs form that I'm bringing candy and I've never had an issue.

Obviously it's got to be in labeled, retail packaging. Just declare it on the form and they will probably smile and wave you on.
Better to be over-honest than have them asking invasive questions because you forget about the free-trade chocolate in your luggage. :)

I am from Ireland and I have been travelling to LA every summer for the last 8 years. I always bring sweets, chocolate, crisps etc for my USA friends. My mum is on a gluten free diet and she brought bread and muffins to Vegas. Just make sure you declare it on the form and you will be fine. The only thing you can not bring are Kinder Eggs, they are not allowed.

Out of curiosity, why no kinder eggs?

Its to do with American Food Safety Laws. European Kinder Eggs have the plastic totally surrounded by chocolate, which in America is illegal. There are fines of around $1000 for importing Kinder Eggs, and yes that does mean that you or me bringing a gift of a Kinder Egg for our American friends counts as importing.

Interesting!!! Something to remember!

I know it's not sweeties but can you bring marmite into the US? My little one is obsessed with the stuff and eats it most days. If nlt im going to have to start to wean off off the stuff!!!! Lol.Thanks.

Anything that is edible is food and must be declared on the form. I would Google Marmite and just make sure it'd not on the banned list like Kinder Eggs

Yes "Condiments such as ketchup (catsup), mustard, mayonnaise, Marmite and Vegemite and prepared sauces that do not contain meat products".
Declare all foods on your form though.

I've taken marmite many times; like others have said make sure you list what you've got and you'll be fine (as long as not on prohibited list or course).

We take lots of food with us (breakfast cereals/teabags/cereal bars/butter/bread/sweets) and have never had a problem. As long as you declare it they will let it all in. Sometimes we have to have our bags x-rayed by customs and sometimes they just wave us through, it must depend on the staff on duty that day as we take the same stuff every year.

Does this include carry on ? I would like to have some hard sweets, gum and pretzels for the flight. Can I take them through customs either side?

Yes taking sweets etc in carry on is ok. I usually stock up on Irish chocolate and sweets for the 11 hour flight to LAX and have them in my carry on. Again you need to declare on your form, as anything which you eat is classed as food
