Sorry this is kind of long - it is a short question but I wanted to give some background, since everyone has such different considerations for their specific child.

We are currently booked in a monorail resort. On our last trip with our son (his first to the World), we split between Polynesian and CR and were really very happy that we were able to walk to and from MK (while at CR) and take the monorail to MK and EPCOT otherwise. Taking the buses to AK and DHS was very challenging, so we only spent time at those parks for a combined 3 of our 11 days at Disney. He has a very short attention span, so waiting for the buses for more than 5 minutes just wasn't working for us. We never waited more than that for a monorail, and he was fine on the monorails. He was sometimes fine on the buses, sometimes had meltdowns.

We are planning on going to Disney again in May and were going to stay at a monorail resort again. We are all booked, deposit paid, but now we are thinking of renting a car to avoid buses altogether. I would like for our son (and the rest of the family) to experience other resorts and other parts of Disney, like the adorable boardwalk area. Just trying to find a good match. The car rental really opens up our options, and I think CBR and S/D may be the best non-monorail options for us.

I have been very much wanting to try an EPCOT area resort and I think the Swan or Dolphin seem like a great choice. The food options appeal to us, as does the ability to walk to two parks; we ordered room service for dinner several times on our last trip. We are basically going to do only quick service meals for breakfast and lunch (much easier with our son) with the exception of a couple of old favorites, so WS so close by seems like a great option. The pool area look fantastic. I think the rooms look super nice, too - almost as nice as at CR, which is my current favorite room style. We would get a resort view room if we stayed there. We are going on the trip with my parents and sister, who are nurses, so they would have the added bonus of the nurse discount if we stay at S/D. They are currently booked at CBR.

Another option is a pirate room at CBR. Our son is in a pirate phase (that and Toy Story) and we thought he would get a kick out of the pirate rooms and pool. I booked my parents in one of the pirate rooms just in case he ended up doing better by the time we are getting close to the trip (and thus wouldn't have a problem with the buses). Then we would move them to a preferred room at CBR and switch into their pirate room.

Anyhow, the ultimate question is whether there is anything we should keep in mind about these resorts as we consider switching. Since we can drive to the parks rather than be stuck with making multiple stops on the resort buses, I think we will have avoided the number one negative of S/D and CBR. I already know about the parking fee at Swan/Dolphin.

I can't promise that we won't switch to a one bedroom at BLT once discounts come out, or if we decide to rent points closer to the date. I do love that walk to MK - we ended almost every night there on the last trip. This will give me something to think about, though!

Thanks so much, and sorry for the long post!

An advantage of the Swolphin is that for Epcot and DHS you can either walk or take a boat. If you have a car and will be driving, be aware that for MK you would have to park at the TTC and then take a monorail or boat. And if you decide to take a bus to/from MK, I'm not sure if it is the same but I do know that from Typhoon Lagoon they have one bus for Beach Club, Boardwalk, Dolphine, Swan and Yacht Club.

Also, the theming in the hotels are not Disney. You do have EMH access, but no KTTW and no dining package availability.

The bus for the Swan and Dolphin is currently shared with Boardwalk only. It was very efficient when we stayed at the Swan in August. Oddly enough, after staying at the Swan for 2 days, we stayed at the CBR for 5 nights. My 18yo DS liked Caribbean Beach better than the Swan. The pool complex at the Swan is lovely, but very busy, so it was not his cup of tea. He (and we) much preferred the quiet pools over at CBR. We stayed in the Aruba section and it was very quiet and serene there compared to the Swan. We loved the island in the middle going over to the quick service and main pool (which again he hated because of the noise and crowds). The bus service at CBR was also terrific. :cool2:

I have a preference for the Swan & Dolphin, that's where we are staying our first few nights next year before moving onto a private villa.

For me the main thing with Disney Resorts is the location, and you cannot beat either an EPCOT or Magic Kingdom area hotel.
You also have the other hotels in the area too which is a big plus point.

The Boardwalk area has great access to EPCOT and the pool/beach area at the S&D is great for kids, and the prices for a deluxe hotel are very reasonable when compared with others.
You can also catch the boat to Hollywood Studios.

I cannot really comment on CBR as I have never stayed there, purely for the location factor - we really want to be close to a theme park.

A nod for The Dolphin here as well. The walking distance, as well as the food options (as someone who has severe food allergies) were the deciding factors for me. Also, where my room was located was very quiet.

The first time we took my DS with high functioning autism to WDW, we stayed at the Dolphin. He loved it. We were only there for 3 days, so he didn't get to swim in the pool. He loved the fountains in the lobby, he loved the escalator, he loved the Fountain restaurant, he loved walking around the Boardwalk, he loved the elevator, he loved the architecture of both the Dolphin and the Swan.
If you have a car, I say the Dolphin may be a great place for your family.

We have since switched to staying at CSR, which is great too, but everytime the bus drives past the Dolphin, my son gets super excited to see it!!

Thanks so much for the helpful replies. I am still hemming and hawing about this. I was even thinking of switching to CR so we can walk to and from MK in case of emergencies. (He also talks about the "monorail train" almost every day). I think I am going to hold out a bit longer before making the switch. I am really concerned about him getting frustrated at having to wait for the bus or on the bus with CBR, but I do think he would love the room and pool. I am afraid that we end up hardly leaving because of the bus stress. Swan and Dolphin make things easier with being able to walk to two of the parks, but so far MK is still his favorite. What a challenge. He has made great improvements in lots of areas, but not with his attention span or his ability to understand the concept of time/waiting.

When we were at CBR in August, we didn't wait more than 5 minutes for a bus to any of the parks. When we were at the Swan a few days before, I think we waited 10 minutes once or twice, the rest of the buses were 5 minute waits. The Swan bus makes stops at many other resorts, depending on what time of year you go. Currently, I am hearing that it stops at YC/BC/BW/Swan and Dolphin. The CBR bus makes stops at every island and the main pool/food court, but they seems to be very quick stops compared to the Swan bus. :cool2:

Another thing to think about is the elevators. There are more of them so less waiting and they're faster than those at the mods.
We love the Dolphin and Swan. The room service is excellent. If your son I( or you) has a favorite tv program that is not Disney, chances are you can watch it at the Dolphin because they have real tv, not 24 hour Disney channels.
With a discount, you might end up paying the same amount you would hvae paid for CBR. Keep an eye on the page linked to see discounts as they become available. If you see something, book it because they don't last. You can always cancel later.

You could always walk thru Epcot and take the Monorail to avoid a bus to MK.

If we go to the MK at night, say for extra magic hours or through closing, wouldn't we have to take the bus back from MK to the hotel? Or do they allow EPCOT-area hotel guests to walk through the park to get to their hotels even after EPCOT is technically closed? I was assuming we would be stuck with the bus at a very busy time. We would definitely prefer walking through the park + monorail to any amount of bus. One meltdown is more than enough to upset our family and everyone around us! I'm sure I'm not alone when I say that we pretty much live in fear of them.

Either take a bus or a cab. If Epcot is closed you won't be able to walk through it.

Epcot is open tuntil 9 will the toddler still be roaming around after that? If so-like suggested take a taxi back. Staying on the monorail only gets you walking to MK. Staying in the boardwalk area gets you walking/boat to 2 parks plus monorail to MK via Epcot.

I won't put him in a cab without a carseat (he's still too little), so it would have to be the bus. He generally goes to sleep on the later side, so 9 wouldn't be late for him. Definitely thinking about it, still. The boardwalk is such a pretty area. Or maybe we will do another split stay and see how it goes. If it doesn't work out well with commuting, we can devote our days at the non-monorail resort to anything but MK. Thanks again, everyone. This has been so helpful.
