We are going to Universal and WDW for the week before Xmas. We are staying at Endless Summer first and then moving to the Swan on Dec 20. In order to use the Genie+ app at 7am on Dec 20, do we have to actually be checked in by then, or does just having the reservation get us that access?

We are planning to be checked in, leave our bags at the bell station and head over to rope drop and DHS anyway, but just wondering how early I will have to get everyone moving to get the Genie benefit that day ;-)

The main reason for this trip is RotR, so buying the ILLS is important to us,

Anyone can make their first Genie+ reservation at 7:00, whether staying onsite or not. It's for making ILL$ reservations that it makes a difference whether you are staying onsite or not. (For this purpose, the Swan is considered to be onsite.) RotR is an ILL$ attraction rather than a G+ attraction. I don't know whether the Swan has online check-in (I think not, but I'm unsure) and/or whether you need to first be checked in before you can book your ILL$. Perhaps someone else can answer that question. But you may as well start making your Genie+ selections at 7:00, even if you may not be able to make your ILL$ selections yet.

Does anyone know how we might get the answer to this without a 72 hour hold for Disney customer service?

I'm very skeptical that someone at Disney customer service could give you an answer that's reliable. Hopefully, someone who has done it, or tried to do it, will notice this thread and describe their experience. You might also want to ask in the Swan and Dolphin thread on the Resorts forum.

Did you ask on the Swan/Dolphin thread on the Resorts board? Someone there might have experience.
