A friend checked in to Swan last night for Food & Wine and woke up to bedbugs. She went directly to the front desk.

I'm not sure which room # or what happened as she doesn't want to talk much right now.

Please be aware.

Mine too. That's the main reason I started the thread. Just to make people aware so maybe they take a couple minutes to look.

Mine too! I guess it doesn't matter where you stay. It can happen anywhere! Which is why we always thoroughly check the bed and furniture for them. Despite the bed bugs, I hope your friend can enjoy the rest of her trip. :goodvibes

We were at the Swan last week. There were no bedbugs in our room.:thumbsup2

Even 5 star hotels get bedbugs. It has nothing to do with the hotel's cleanliness. They cannot know if their guests are bringing bedbugs with them. It only becomes the hotel's fault when they do nothing to fix the problem. So please keep us updated on what the Swan is doing for your friend and to get rid of the bedbugs. My sister worked front desk at POP several years ago. Only once did anyone complain of bedbugs. However, my sister said that the family was claiming this after many other "issues" they had. To her and the other cast members, it was obvious this family was trying to get things for free including their room. But Disney takes this very seriously and even after an inspection found their old room, (they were moved to another room), to be bed bug free, they still exterminated it. I hope the Swan will follow the same procedures as I'm staying at the Dolphin for Christmas and bedbugs are definately not what I was hoping Santa would bring me this year!

And when you get home please put everything through the wash - even clean clothes. Then either steam or vacuum out your suitcases. Such a pain but we started doing this last year after traveling.

Exactly. I'm sure the OP's friend's "discovery" was dealt with. And I hope no one thinks the Swan is a dirty place or anything just because of this. My brother-in-law is an exterminator and he's cleaned bed bugs from all kinds of places.

Disney does take this very seriously and has a complete regimen that must be followed when a report is confirmed. I believe that Starwood/Westin has the same or similar regimen.

That's the biggest issue, reports are most times, wrong. People confuse everything from Pavement Rash (it's a thing) ... to allergic reactions to the hotels detergent ... as being bedbugs.

Lord knows I"m guilty, after reading about it for so many years on these boards, I was convinced I had bed bugs at POP CENTURY once. No, I had pavement rash.. I was wrong. I know I wasn't the family in question above -- because I was traveling alone at the time. ;)

Secondly.. I 'm not a huge fan of non-first person posts about these matters. Since the OP wasn't the person involved, we don't know for example what steps the hotel took to the mitigate the situation.. or a myriad of other questions that the OP can't answer because she wasn't the person directly involved.

So I'm going to end this as follows :

It's always wise to check your hotel room BEFORE bringing bags into it.

Bedbugs are NOT a sign of the hotels cleanliness, they can be brought in by anyone and the only way to remove them is generally a complete high temperature steam cleaning of all soft / cloth / fabric surfaces in the room... whatever other hotel specific procedures. Most hotels do a preliminary check after each guest, but it would be prohibitively expensive to treat each room as if it had bedbugs after each guest, it's just not practical.

A guests materials can be high temperature washed (except for plastic or cotton-poly blends) which can be replaced. I know for example of a guest experience at the Poly in 2008... where a guest DID discover bedbugs in their Concierge Level room! Same procedures as everywhere else.. replace what can't be high temperature wash/steamed.. including suitcases and high temperature wash/steam EVERYTHiNG ELSE.

It's not a death sentence, it's a fact of life in the hospitality industry.

Thanks,

Knox

Swan took care of the situation right away. She was moved rooms and her belongings were cleaned in the appropriate manner.

She had woken up to find 2 bugs crawling and took them down to the front desk.

She doesn't want to discuss it anymore and went on enjoying her vacation.

I started the thread so people are aware. I know bedbugs can happen from a road side motel to The Waldorf and everywhere in between. Living in NYC, we had/have a huge problem with them in dept. stores, movie theaters, office buildings, etc.

You do realize that anyone can have bedbugs in their homes? Even you. Saying this is inexcusable puzzles me.

I don't have bedbugs in my home! It is disney's responsibility to have the rooms checked out and addressed before guests occupy the rooms. That is what they pay housekeeping to do. To me and I'm sure many others who are paying big bucks for vacation do not expect to have bedbugs in their rooms or roaches for that matter. I've had to address having those in my room a few of my disney trips, still say inexcusable and unacceptable!!!!!

Well, first, the Swan and Dolphin are not Disney hotels, they are owned and operated by Tishman Hotels so we can take Disney out of the discussion right there.

Second, being in the hotel industry I can tell you that they can occur in any hotel of any standard. You can follow all the procedure you want as the hotel and still get them because they can come in with the luggage. To prevent that the hotel would have to steam everyboday's luggage on arrival and that's not going to happen. One simply can't assume that the bedbugs found permanently reside in the hotel, that's unreasonable and shows a lack of understanding how the problem has propagated across the continent.

What you can expect of a hotel is to react to them appropriately as this hotel apparently did.

There are a LOT of rooms for Disney to inspect. If the shower is not working correctly - they can miss it because the housekeeper did not shower in that room. A light bulb can be out & not recognized - because they don't turn on every light.

BUT - how can a housekeeper make a bed without noticing bedbugs? We always look for signs such as bloody stains on the mattress, etc. How can a housekeeper miss that? :confused3
