if I use my $20 credit on a late flight and then an eariler flight come up can I cancell and get the original ($20)credit back and the new credit( the difference) and change my flight.

Yep! I do it all the time. Just make sure you keep your confirmation # fromt eh cancelled flight.

It's even easier if you just click on "Change Air Res." rather than cancelling and rebooking. If you just change it, you'll keep your original res. # and keep all credits, assuming the price hasn't gone up.
