In advance-thanks for any advice!

DH and I want to take a trip with DD and one of her friends. We will pay for all flights.

We have enough points for 2 round trip tickets. If we have enough points for additional legs, that would be a bonus.

To me, it makes more sense to pay for the tickets for DH and me, so that we get the frequent flier miles for our flights, and use points for DD and her friend.

My question-can we use our points to buy tickets for DD's friend?

Thanks.

I just used my points to buy mine, my daughters, her boyfriends and the grand kids and sister law with no issues..

How does it work if I have enough points for 4 of us but want 6 tickets? Can I use whatever points I have and then pay for the rest or will I have to buy additional points for the other 2 tickets? And I have to buy points will it cost the same as buying the tickets?

You cannot pay with a combination of points plus cash. It's either one or the other.

I would never pay for additional points. The price that you pay to purchase points is never worth what you would pay OOP for the actual ticket.

It sounds as if you have enough points for 8 tickets (4 tickets in each direction), plus a little more. I suggest breaking your trip down into one-way flights. Purchase everyone's ticket for the flight down with points (6 tickets total). Use the remaining points to buy as many one-way return flights as you can get (probably 2, perhaps as many as 3). Pay cash for the remaining tickets.

Thanks, that's what I thought. I was hoping to have it all on 1 confirmation # so it would be easier to check in.

FYI, when you buy with points on SW, you will get a Conf # for each person, even if you do it as a group buy. So, ultimately, you're not saving yourself any work.

Ok thanks, I didn't know that

I would go with your original plan to purchase the friend's tickets with points, and yours with cash. if for any reason, the friend ends up not going and you have paid cash for that ticket, that person would have a credit that can only be used by them at a later date (unless you buy a fully refundable ticket). if you use points for that ticket, and they cancel, the points will be redeposited into your account.

Very good points!
Thanks!
