Is there somewhere in MK that we can do the 24hr prior checkin with SW or do you have to do it at your hotel?

With all I know it is at the resort

You can do the 24 hr check in at guest services in MK. You also can do the check in at any Disney resort (not just the one you're staying at). Last year, we stayed at CSR, but were having dinner at the Contemporary at the 24hr mark. The front desk at CR did our SW check in and printed our boarding passes.
