I've never booked SW with points before, so I need a little help. Can I book my family of four on one reservation and use points from each of their accounts? Or must I do each reservation separately? And if I must do them separately, is it a problem to have children on their own reservation without an adult?

I believe you hafta book using points from each person's RR account. As for the minors, book the adult first, then the minors, as they will ask for the accompanying adult's confirmation number.
Also, remember you can transfer and buy points if you are just short on points.

You will need to make four (4) separate reservations for each person booking with points.

And if you choose not to purchase EBCI, you will have to check-in each person separately at T-24 hours. What a pain!

So then I suppose if I want to use points going out and pay cash coming back home, that also needs to be two separate reservations?

If you are using points from one account then you can book it at one time. That's if you have enough points in one account to do more than one booking. Then, you book them together, but it does give you separate confirmation codes and seemingly separate reservations. If you want to use each individual's account to reserve their own flight, then you book each one separate while logged into the appropriate account.

Not a problem to have a reservation of a child without an adult.

Better verify that one...I just purchased flights for our family of 9, it wouldn't let me proceed with the booking for the 6 year old without putting a confirmation number of the accompanying adult. The exception is if you are paying the $50 fee for an unaccompanied minor. I'v done both.

You will have a total of five (5) SWA confirmations:
Four (4) outbound - 1 for each RR member using points
One (1) return for your entire family booked with "cash".

As PP noted, if any RR member in your family has enough points to purchase multiple tickets, then you may be able to reduce the number of reservations/confirmations needed for your trip.
