Suv, Truck Owners-What if?

Hi
I was wondering if there was a extra tax put on if you had a truck, suv, hummer type of vehicle, for the states that have personal property car tax and also if gas stations somehow added a special tax when you filled up, would you still own these type vehicles?
Now, I have 2 cars, it is just DD7, DM and myself, so I don't need a big vehicle. Nothing against the big vehicles, as long as I am not paying the car payment on them, I don't care what anyone has.
But just out of curiousty, what if there were extra taxes imposed on the bigger vehicles, what would you do?

We'd pay the tax. There are 5 of us and DH is an Electrical contractor. Crew/quad cab truck for us!

Funny you should ask. My dh and I was just talking about this very subject today while driving to Slidell, La. We would just have to pay the higher luxury tax and the higher gas tax.

I'd probably pay it. No way would I go to a minivan and with my kids the age they are we need the extra room. If this happened in say 10 years, I would probably just go back to a car. I plan on getting a bigger SUV in 2-3 years and keeping it until it dies or I'm able to downsize.

Pay the tax. Where I live, you almost HAVE to have 4 wheel drive in the winter. Anything else would be impractical for me. I like my SUV and when it's paid for I'd like to get another one.

If they tax mini-vans, too, then I'd be fine. However, since my SUV gets the same mileage as a mini-van, I'd be pretty annoyed if someone getting similar mileage wasn't taxed the same way.

There is nothing, short of killing me, that anyone can do to get me out of my SUV. I will never drive a car. It will never be feasible for me. I'm already taxed to death anyway, so bring it on.

Why not tax cars that don't get a certain mpg? What difference does it make if my SUV gets 21mpg and the Mercedes Station Wagon gets 16mpg? I should pay and the Mercedes shouldn't? Are you kidding?

I say, if your car doesn't get 30mpg highway, you pay the tax. Simple and fair.

Well until they came out with a car that can tow a race trailer, I guess we'd be paying taxes with the rest of them.

I already pay more. Registration fees are based on the weight of our vehicles. Some cars already have a gass guzzler fed tax when built. And my new Hummer H3 gets better gas mileage than the truck I traded for it.

Me, too. I have trouble every year because they no longer make my car and they keep putting me in the category of "Trailblazer", which raises my registration rates. I don't have a Trailblazer and my car is lighter. But, every year I get stuck with paying for a Trailblazer I don't have. After 4 years, I just laugh it off....I'd rather keep my SUV and pay for the Trailblazer. :)

Don How do you like your H3 .I have a 93 jeep Cher. and a 99 Jeep Grand.

Looking at the H3 and the new 7 Pass Jeep.

OK...well, let's mention the "tax loophole", eh?

If you buy a BIG suv, certain wt., you can write it off if you use it for your business. So what is that???

I love my "Baby Hummer", but you'll only get 5 passengers in the H3.

Personally, I don't like the idea of an "excess consumption" tax. IMO, it's punitive in nature.

I really never liked the idea of a "luxury" tax either.

Or a "death" tax.

As a matter of fact, I don't like taxes at ALL! So there!

I guess that's something people who own businesses get. I don't get it. DH doesn't get it. Nobody I know gets it and DH is a contractor and works with people who drive massive pick-up trucks that dwarf our SUVs. They don't get it. I think it's pretty limited in the classification of people who can actually take that business deduction.

We already pay an extra (gas guzzler) tax at time of purchase and there are tax breaks offered on buying more fuel efficient vehicles as incentive to lean towards buying those.

I guess if I really want my SUV, and I do, I would have to pay anything else they throw at me!

It is a loophole....if you use your SUV for business you can get the SUV paid for. People are claiming it for business and meeting the requirements.

Yeah! :thumbsup2

I specifically don't like the death tax. I earned the money. I paid taxes on the money. Why should it be taxed again? Just because I'm dead doesn't mean I don't know my money is being taxed twice. ;)

How it different from, say, my real estate agent who can deduct mileage and maintance on his Audi A4 because he uses it for work? I've never looked into it since I can't get it, but I know, as a realtor, you can deduct mileage and maintenance....as can most professions where car travel is necessary.

But, we could make an entire thread of silly tax loopholes. I'd guess more people get the EITC than get the big vehicle tax (and it's not just SUVs). The tax code is riddled with stupid things.
