I just received an email with the ebay logo saying that my ebay account is going to be suspended for fradulant activity. It had a link where I could supply information proving that I am the person on the account. I am assuming that this is a fake email. I did send a copy to ebay, but I was wondering if anyone else has gotten something like this.

Thanks!

I got one too! :bounce: :bounce:

And it was a very credible email. I sent it to ebay and didn't hear back for a long time. But yes, you are right! It is a fake.

Thanks, guys. I assumed it was. I don't trust anything any more. Except you guys, of course!

And if any of us ask for personal info from you, don't trust us, either!

(snip)........ The typo's are always a tip off too.
But not on the DIS, right?? :p :teeth: Too many of us make them on a regular basis, including me !!!! :teeth:

I received these regularly for awhile from "ebay" and "paypal" and "yahoo". I always forward the email to spoof@ebay.com or spoof@paypal.com, etc. I usually get an email back the next day saying they are fake. I have not received one in over a month now. Something that I am getting a lot of in my bulk mail is "failure deliveries" which are also mostly fake.

With my email program it tells the address of a link if you hold your mouse over it. The fake ones always have a really long address with a bunch of numbers in it. I did get one like that a few weeks ago.

I keep getting these ones from "Baron" somebody saying a distant relative passed away and I am the only living relative, blah blah blah. I wish they would leave me alone! Anyone else get those?

I have been getting several a day about the relative passing away from other countries. There was a program on tv a while back about these emails stating that when you tried to "help" these folks to "give" you 10 million dollars, the first thing they want is a "processing fee"...as much as they think they can squeeze out of "soon to be wealthy" poor soul.

Every once in a while I get emails from "eBay" or "PayPal" with a link asking me for personal information. They are always fake. I've even had some that ask me for the 3-digit security code off the back of my credit card! I always just pass them on to the spoof patrol.

You can't even trust hovering over the link anymore because there are ways to spoof that too.
For more on those "Your distant relative left you tons of money after dying in a plane crash in Nigeria" email, check out www.scamorama.com
It is one of my favorite sites.

One thing you can do is sign up at www.spamcop.net . One of the things you can do there is report any spam; they will process it and find where it really came from and what the actual URLs are that are in the body. They will then forward their reports to the ISPs and sometimes other services (such as spoof@eBay.com . When they send the report, they do NOT identify you. I have seen some ISPs (such as Pacbell) respond to Spamcop with a "thank you" type of message, which Spamcop will then pass on to me.

I received a similar e-mail about 1 month ago but...... I clicked on the links:rolleyes: As you might have guessed, my ebay account was "compromised" someone was selling 2 motorbikes! They also somehow got into my hotmail account. Then I had to close my paypal account incase that was compromised too. Needless to say, it was a BIG hassel getting it all straigtened out. The people at ebay said that one quick way to tell if it is a fake email is that it will say "dear ebay member" instead of "dear your user name".

I get these for ebay, paypal and citibank (I don't even have an account there). I just ignore them now.

I am so glad that I read these boards. I got one like the OP did, saying I was going to loose my account in due to fraud. At first I was scared that something WAS going on, but I mailed it to spoof@ebay, and I was told VERY quicky that it was NOT from them (ebay).
Thank you all for informing us all that it can happen, and what to do! I LOVE these boards ::yes::

I'm amazed that I finally got one last week! My first! I reported it to eBay right away.

I got two of them within a week, this is ridiculous, dont these people have anything better to do?

I too have gotten a couple of those spoof mails from "eBay". I too forwarded them to eBay and received a reply about a day later informing me that it was indeed an attempt to get my personal information.

More recently, I got two emails suggesting something or other regarding PayPal or eBay... but they used Russian alphabet characters in the subject! Watch out for that one!
