Sushi

i'm not a big sushi lover.. but, i must admit i haven't tried tooo much.. i did however enjoy the california roll..

I would go for the teriyaki steak and tempura combo. and for sushi, try the california roll which doesn't have any raw seafood. If you want to try raw seafood ingredients, then how about the ama ebi-sweet shrimp, or the maguro-tuna or sake-salmon.
Sushi sounds yummy right now.

Thanks for the suggestions. I know I'm not having the smelt or salmon eggs.

Mmmm, now I'm really hungry for sushi! Spider roll is my favorite with tempura soft shell crab in it. If you've never had tempura, all it means is deep fried in a real light and crispy bread crumb batter. If you aren't into crab, I'd definitely recommend tempura shrimp roll, no weird fishy flavors to it at all!

My personal preference is Yellowtail, but that's really only if you're interested in more sushi-sushi. ;)

I get sick just looking at sushi. You people are BRAVE. ;)

We are going to a restaurant tonight that serves sushi. I was thinking of giving it a try. Any tips or suggestions on what I should try? Here's a link to the menu:

My husband will eat any sushi, but I'm not quite as adventuresome. California rolls are a must, or anything from the cooked roll menu would be good. From the raw roll, try a rainbow roll. The whitefish, tuna, and salmon are very mild and good. I eat off my husband's rainbow rolls all the time. The Philadelphia roll sounds good!

I'm jealous! I want sushi tonight now too :)

Thanks for all the replies. I loved the California roll. Tried the raw tuna. Didn't like the texture of raw fish at all, but I wanted to give it a try. I thought Sushi meant "raw fish". I found out last night it just means "rolled in rice". Yummy food last night. We will be going back to Nami's again soon.

Please note that the texture of raw fish varies greatly from fish-to-fish. There is even a very very big difference in the texture of raw tuna. I think there are three different kinds of sushi-grade tuna. The lowest grade tuna is barely tolerable to me. I avoid it in sashimi, but it's "okay" in maki (especially when all I'm really in the mood for a medium for wasabi). High-quality (raw) salmon has a great texture, IMHO, like firm butter, not at all grainy like standard tuna. Yellowtail has a better flavor IMHO, but the texture isn't always as great as salmon. On the other end of the scale, I cannot stomach octopus or squid.

I thought Sushi meant "raw fish".
As you pointed out, "sushi" is about the rice. "Sashimi" is raw fish.

You're not the only one who though Sushi was all raw fish. Everytime I mention sushi around my mother she comments that she won't eat raw fish. I keep telling her that it's not all raw. There are different varieties and some don't even have fish in them.

My favorites are: spicy salmon (raw) and spicy scallop (cooked). I've ordered spicy scallop at a few places though and some of them were raw - which I didn't like. But there is a place right near my house and I love theirs.

There is also a difference between sushi and sashimi and it's all in the way it's made. One is a piece of raw fish on top of a mound of rice and the other is rolled. I actually like both.

For anyone wanting to try, I always recommend the california roll first. Start slow!

Actually, sashimi is just raw fish -- period. The distinction you're raising is between "maki" (rolled with rice) and "nigiri" (on top of a mound of rice). Nigiri, incidently, is the original form of sushi. Maki came later.

The OP made me so hungry for sushi, DH and I ended up going out last night for some. :rotfl: Thanks a lot!

For those who don't like sushi, how about some rice crispy sushi from California Grill?

Thanks for the clarification. I can never remember all the distinctions. I just know I like it.

Boston roll
shrimp tempura
spider roll (one of my faves!)
alaskan
spicy tuna
sake
unagi
tuna and fresh salmon from the sashimi menu

argh, this is making me hungry! I love sushi
