Please help--DD and I are going to Tokyo Dining (she wants chicken teriyaki that is seperate from the rice & veggies ;) ). I would LOVE to try sushi, but , have no idea where to start. I like fish & shellfish (crab, shrimp, lobster) but, don't do clams etc. How can I know which sushi has cooked or raw fish and what would anyone suggest for a sushi beginner? Thanks for your help:worship:

You will definitely like to try the California roll which is basically made with cooked crab meat(some use imitation) Let your server knows what you want to try. I ate there twice this summer and both times the servers were extremely accommodating.

Definitely start with the california roll as luckytobeme suggested. Any shrimp, crab or lobster will be cooked. A spider roll may sound (and look) intimidating but it's fried, soft shell crab.

I'm sure that your server will be able to suggest items that don't contain raw fish. And if you feel adventurous try a tuna roll or yellowtail roll.

I'll bet that you love it!

I was always very intimidated by sushi, but once I gave it a try - I'm hooked! I agree with the other posters that california roll is a good place to start. I would also recommend shrimp tempura (cooked) and if you are feeling adventurous try spicy tuna roll or something with salmon in it. I would definitely recommend giving the raw sushi a try - I think you'll be pleasantly suprised at how delicious it is! Also, I'm not sure if you are on the DDP or not, but from what I understand, the only dinner sushi combinations that are included in the plan include sashimi (someone correct me if I'm wrong). Sashimi is just the raw fish over rice. Not sure if you could maybe substitute or I guess maybe just get a roll for an appetizer?! :confused3

Good Luck! You'll be a sushi pro in no time pirate:

Tokyo dining is great and the servers are so lovely, very willing and happy to spend time in explaining and helping you to choose. We loved this restaurant not only for the food but the atmosphere and how friendly everyone was that worked there.
Have a wonderful time.

Thanks guys! And,duh, obviosly crab & shrimp would be cooked ;). Yes we'll be using DDP but, I might just get the sushi OOP in order to try a couple things. Anyone else want to chime in? How do I know if the fish is cooked or not (ie what is the name for the raw fish--sashmi?) Thanks again :)

If it's not crab, shrimp, octopus or eel, it's not going to be cooked. Sushi is usually broken into three categories: nigiri, sashimi and rolls. They are essentially identical, except nigiri is going to be on a rice brick and sashimi is just the fish slice by itself. Rolls offer smaller pieces of fish in every bite, so they might be easier to handle first time around.

Depending on where you live, you may be able to get much better or much cheaper sushi right in town. Just as a comparison, I spent $36 on good sushi in Vegas once, but could have gotten the same quality and quantity in my hometown for $8.

IS the Sushi any good at WDW? I'm a sushi addict and can get pretty good sushi where I live- in fact, I tend to eat it 2-3 X a week.. Is there anything special at WDW?

If the fish is cooked or is something like smoked salmon, it will say so. Assume it's raw unless otherwise noted (or a kind of seafood that would have to be cooked--eel and octopus would also be cooked). If in doubt, ask your server. Anything "tempura" is of course deep-fried. Try sweet potato tempura sushi if available--yum!

Sashimi is not sushi, it is slices of raw fish--no rice (see pic). Sushi is actually the rice. Here's a helpful site: http://www.sushifaq.com/

Hi there...I loved Tokyo Dining in Epcot...We had the Volcano Roll which was outstanding and their sashimi was excellent as well.

I would suggest starting at sushi bar at Kona if it is still open, for one basic reason. Nori. I dislike sushi becuase I don't like traditional Nori, I don;t like the taste of it - think seaweed. At Kona, they have a decent Shrimp Tempura roll, which is both cooked and is made with a white nori. Since I have found white nori and soy paper, I have learned to enjoy sushi made with it. Kona also makes the basics, like a california roll.

I've heard Dinsey sushi is mediocre and over priced.
If you've never had it before, I wouldn't order it in case you don't like it. Better to have a wasted meal somewhere else besides Disney.

If you wan't to try real sushi but aren't brave, stick to the raw tuna and salmon. I'm still not brave enough to try eel.

I am no expert in sushi or sashimi, however, I have eaten enough raw fish to be able to tell whether or not it is good and fresh. I highly suggest Tokyo Dining's sushi/sashimi. BTW, Eel is cooked and glazed with some kind of sweet soy sauce.
