If you had a choice, would you choose to have surgery the day after you got home from disney or the next day?

My GYN is scheduling me for a laparoscopy in december. We are going to Disney dec 15th-21st. There are only 3 days that we could have the surgery done. The 22nd, 23rd or 24th. Having it done any other time in december is not an option.

We live in California and will be landing at around 7PM our time. We would have to be at the hospital by 5 AM the next morning. The hospital is about 45 minutes from our house if there is no traffic so we would have to leave at about 4 AM.

It is going to be at least an overnight stay in the hospital because I can no longer have outpatient surgery if it involves general anasthesia because of previous complications.

The only thing that really concerns me is that if our flight gets delayed and we dont make it back. We do have a connection in vegas so we figure that as long as we make it to vegas, if something happens to our flight there, we can drive back to LA.

The only other consideration we have for this is that if something happens and we do not make it back in time, I have to wait until June to have the surgery done.

I'm really leaning towards having it the 23rd but than I think....what are we really going to do the 22nd? It seems like it would be a waste of a day.

What would you do?

Personally, I would want it done asap and would probably do it the day after you return. The only thing that would make me nervous is the possibility of a flight delay due to weather. Even though you do not live in a snowy area, your plane could be coming from Chicago, or Boston, and there can be snow storms in December, but usually not the big ones. For peace of mind, go ahead and do the 23rd. Since your flight lands at 7pm, it does not leave a lot of room for delays. Take the 22nd to relax and unpack!

I can tell you what I did. I had it the next day 7 years ago.

WDW until Nov 22, surgery Nov 23th. I was already exhausted so putting me under was a piece of cake.

I would go with the 23rd.. Considering your health issues, I think it would be wise to have a day of rest before having surgery..

Good luck - and have a great trip! :goodvibes

When are your preadmits? I had my similar surgery the day after I got back from vacation (the pre admits the day before I left), but was sorry, I was so worn out, I came down with a cold, the anesthesiologist wasn't a happy camper and wanted to cancel, but after much todo and fuss, I had it, but I ended up having to stay overnight. I was wiped.

Oooh that's a toughie. On one hand you'll be exhausted from your trip and vegging in the hospital, probably with the help of pain meds, could be a good thing. But the flight delay possiblity worries me. What will your recovery be like? Would doing it on the 23rd potentially ruin Christmas (if you celebrate it)?

I think I'd do 22nd and risk it w/ the flight delay because if you have to sleep over on the 23rd, that's getting you out of the hospital on Christmas Eve Day (again, if you celebrate...)

All of my preadmission and pre-surgical workups can be done before we leave for disney. I have 4 appointments on Dec 13th to do all of that (internist, pulmonologist, cardiologist and anasthesiologist).

I have to be on antibiotics and predinisone for a week before surgery because of my asthma.

The recovery should be a piece of cake. But, I also had brain surgery this summer so i think that anything will be a walk in the park after that.

It's normally an outpatient surgery but I have never come out of surgery without complications. Usually it's related to anasthesia. The severity of my asthma makes is difficult for them extubate me and I always have low O2 sats when they do extubate me so they are planning on me staying at least overnight reagrdless of how well the surgery goes.

We don't celebrate christmas so that's not an issue.

Thanks eveyrone for your opinions. I think right now we are probably leaning towards the 23rd for two reasons. 1)we wont be risking it as much with delays and 2) i can get in to see my pulmonologist the 22nd so he can give me another okay instead of just seeing him more than a week prior (he did that before my last surgery as well)

I would wait until the following day. Give yourself a day to catch up and relax.

I'm glad you are waiting. I've only had my c-section experiences to compare. The one with only a trial labor preceding it was WAAAAAY easier to recover from than the one with extended labor. I felt that recovery was much easier going into a surgery well rested. Obviously not the same, but based on that my goal is to be well rested going into any medical procedure.

Sounds good! Hope all goes well..:goodvibes

I would wait until the 23rd. Use the 22nd to unpack and catch up on laundry, go grocery shopping, or other things you won't feel like doing immediately after the surgery.

I hope your surgery goes well and you are complication-free coming out of anesthesia!
