Jen, sound like fun but how much "room" is that file taking up on your hardrive?
I have a backup drive for my Mac. But like to know file sizes before biting the bullet. Thanks for the info!

Thats a good question - but i have no idea - i figured that I needed fonts for SCAL - so if they are all in one place makes it easier for me. I have a laptop that i just use for crafting - and it has enough room on it for stuff that i need.
i guess you could always put them on a portable drive. I will deleate any of the ones i dont think will work for SCAL.

It is worth checking it out for the david walker stuff alone.

I just learned about this the other day and did it. There is some cute stuff in there. I read about it on the SCAL message board - on there there is also a reference to a yahoo group you can join to get fonts emailed to you daily. Like 8-12 fonts a day! I don't know if I'm going to keep up with that because I feel overwhelmed when I open my inbox but it's a great way for those looking to build their collection fast to do so!

I don't think fonts are big memory hogs like pictures or music. I don't know how much this recent addition added, but I can tell you that my "Fonts" folder has 1309 fonts and is using 101 MB.

I do have an external hard drive, but I have not yet moved Fonts over there. At some point I will, just to have them backed up. I understand there is also a way to have the fonts on your computer, but not have them installed to keep things running faster, but I haven't had a problem with speed yet.

Don't have SCAL but am intrigued. I have cricut design studio. Will they both work on the same computer? I use my work laptop for everything so can't afford to mess it up!

I just went to the download site and it's 14.48 mb so it's pretty small unless it is azip file. Your regular fonts directory has the bazillion windows fonts plus anything you've added so it's larger.

Yes you can have The design studio and SCAL on the same computer. SCAL even lets you put it on more than one computer - so currently i have it on my laptop and my desktop - but use it mostly on my laptop.
I am having so much fun with SCAL it lets you cut dingbats and it welds SO easily!!!
For the price of the program - I know I saved myself A TON of money because I dont think i will buy another Cricut font Cart. again.

12 days until my bday and DH wants to get me SCAL (and a laptop to go with it!) Can you weld with SCAL alone or do you need design stuio to do the welding?

Yes you can! I don't have the design studio (just the free trial to get the firmware). Welding is very easy with SCAL.

One more question along these lines (sorry if this considered thread hijacking): Can I weld my cricut fonts using SCAL? I mean, the fonts for which I have cartridges. Or do I have to have the design studio to weld those?

Did someone say there is another thread on this SCAL? Are there sales on the software anywhere or is it online only? I don't want to pay 75 bucks when I have design studio already but I'd love it I think (I'm a 'puter girl for sure!)

Lucky girl!

Happy Early Birthday!

No. SCAL cannot work with your cartridges - only the TTF fonts you have on your computer. To weld the cartridges, you DO need the Design Studio.

There is no physical SCAL software. It is online only. There is a coupon though - I'll go look for the thread that mentioned it.

I've only had it for a couple weeks, and barely scratched the surface of it, but I am totally in love with it. The way I think of it, it was less than the cost of a cartridge, and it just opened me up to the possibility of thousands of fonts. Learning how to do shapes is a bit more challenging, but there are lots of tutorials out there. And you can use the same files the Wishblade does (you do need a couple free programs to convert them into the type of files SCAL can read), so there are lots of ones out there for sale. For example, I needed silverware for one of my swaps and I have not mastered creating my own files yet, so I just bought a Wishblade file for $3 and I'm good to go.

There is a lot of information on the SCAL forums (http://forums.surecutsalot.com/). If you're thinking about getting it, I'd recommend browsing those a bit.

I feel like I could do commercials for it - I love it so much!

i did a search for free program to unzip that type of file - sorry i dont remember what type it was its simular to a zip file.
