Support Group - 10 lbs or less

MMQ~ 1:06 is awesome!!! I did my first 10K in 1:06:30 too and it was a pretty big push for me (esp at the end). You could race that even faster :thumbsup2

I've been good on my eating- last night at Panera I got black bean soup, a salad with dressing on the side and even got an apple instead of bread! I was so proud of myself.

This weekend will be the real kicker. My birthday is this coming Wednesday so we're going out with some friends to the beach and a restaurant as a little celebration so I need to put special effort towards being good. My real treat will be on Wednesday when DBF takes me to a local place that makes cupcakes! I am a sucker for cake but I told him I don't want one in the house because I'll just eat the whole thing.

I hope everyone has a good weekend! I think our heat wave might be starting to let up a little... it's only in the mid 90's today :lmao: Last night it was 95 degrees out at 9:30PM!!! PM?! Crazy. I live in Virginia. Not Mexico.

i'm back  Vegas was awesome, it was our 5th girls trip and still we have great fun together. We saw Terry Fator (ventriloquist who won Am. Got Talent), drank too much, and brought home all the money i took. that is winning in my book! our routine was the 2.99 breakfast and then one big meal sometime during the day. I did split meals a couple times too, but i'm not trying to kid myself....I have vaca fluff to lose.

tonight we have a BBQ to attend, reading everyone's chit-chat from the last week is swirling around in my head and trying to convince me that TOMORROW i will begin eating on track, not monday ;) it's hard to be motivated with another holiday weekend approaching! that's backwards thinking...i should be thinking I've got to be motivated to account for a holiday weekend coming...

Welcome back OhMom! Glad you had a great trip!

My weekend was okay - not spectacular in terms of eating though. Did my Saturday run - I really struggled. I think I am done trying to do runs first thing in the morning (the last 3 weekends I've really struggled with them and Saturday is the only day of the week I go in the morning). The first 4 miles I was really dying, walked from 3.5-4 back to my house and drank like 20 oz of water! I was so hot and thirtsy! After that I went back out to finish and it was much better - I went 3 miles and was able to run it all - felt SO much better after getting some water. So I did a total of 7 mile route but only ran 6.5 of it, which was my goal. I was completely exhausted the rest of the day though - morning runs really wear me out.

Eating was bad pretty much all weekend, I'm up a pound today, and I've been very discouraged on my diet the last few days. I was looking back on my sheet I use to track everything and realized that I've only lost 1 pound since the beginning of the month - 28 days and I've lost 1 pound. With running 4x a week and keeping at 1500 calories a day, I'm not sure what is going on...I must be eating the wrong foods. So I spent quite a bit of time this weekend looking at and reading up on the South Beach diet, and I am going to give this a try. After finding some meal plans and food lists, there is a lot of stuff on there I can eat during the first 2 weeks of Phase 1 - I defeinitely don't think I'm going to starve! I was going to wait until after the 4th of July due to the alcohol restriction and us going camping, but decided against waiting - I can go a few days without a drink, I haven't generally been drinking much up there anyway, since I get up and walk or run on the mornings I'm up there. It looks completely doable for me and I am excited to give it a try. Gotta run to the store this morning and get a few things, but I'm excited to get started on it. :thumbsup2

Hope everyone had a good weekend!!

Glad you had fun in Vegas, OhMom! I love Vegas. Haven't been in a couple years even though it's just a few hours drive away. Boyfriend has a cousin there who has been bugging him to visit. Maybe in the fall when it's not so hot I can convince him he should go and take me with him. ;)

This weekend I actually behaved myself very well food-wise. I weighed the same today as I did on Saturday morning, and that for me is a victory. I did get an ice cream cone at McDonald's on Sunday, but Boyfriend and I walked there and back (about an hour-long trip) so at least I burned off some of the creamy vanilla calories. Last week I dialed down the working out to let my tattoo heal (which I haven't told my parents about yet.:scared: Yes, I am 29 years old, and still afraid of disappointing my parents!) but this week it's back to full strength.

I feel ya, Mommy McQueen! Isn't it frustrating when you feel like the weight should be coming off, but it's not?? I think I've hit that point as well. Seems like lately no matter how good I am, that scale doesn't seem to move much. On the flip side, I'm noticing good changes in how my body looks. My tummy is flatter and my legs and arms are firming up nicely. Really, if I could just magic off some of my lovehandle area, I'd be pretty much content.

4th of July coming up! Any fun plans?

ok i am not committed as i told myself i would be...i think i need 'committed'! what is my deal? i just can not tear myself away from the sugar...of course i brought home EthelM choc from Vegas and then in came the donuts...ugh. i have not officially exercised since returning either. i've been active but not focused cardio. what is my deal!! obviously i have something to work through and i keep telling myself just coast this week and after the Fourth....but the problem with this is I always push back my target start date b/c this or that is upcoming. ugh. i'm sorry to be the downer and ramble i'm just so frustrated. it's 10 stinkin stupid pounds!

I was actually pretty good over the weekend- only up 1 lb in water weight and I'm already down this morning. We went to the beach and usually that's a snacking fest but I stuck to a healthy sandwich on wheat and an apple. I'm still about 1.5 lbs up from before vacation though so I'm still working on that!!

Phase 2 is heaven compared to what phase 1 was for me. MMQ~ be wary of how you're feeling on the diet. It's easy to get tired and have no energy if you aren't strict about getting in "good" carbs. I couldn't do long runs on phase 1 but I'm kickin now that I'm on phase 2. I did 4.5 miles on the treadmill last night and felt great. If you don't have energy, move onto a strict phase 2. This is an awesome forum with tons of info: http://www.southbeach-diet-plan.com/forum/index.php

We're going to the lake this weekend with DBF's family and it's usually an eating fest. I just need to be as strict as I can about not overdoing it- since his mom will be feeding us whatever she feels like feeding us, it will be a matter of self control more than anything else.

Tomorrow is my birthday so I'm treating myself to cupcakes w/ DBF. I didn't want a cake in the house but LOVE cake so we're going for cupcakes. No leftovers :)

I've already planned out two days to run while we're at the lake, AND a day to play tennis :thumbsup2

Hi OhMom! So sorry to hear you are feeling down! We all go through it at different times. I too always did the "I'll start next Monday" or "I'll start after the holiday" kind of thing. Motivation really does come from within, and sometimes people are just not motivated at a certain time, but you may be the next day!

This may be TMI and not really weight-loss releated, but I'll shared my motivation: I spent 7 years wanting to lose weight and half-trying, only to gain it back and be frustrated. Its now been 6 full months that I've been on this diet and this is the longest I've ever stuck with any diet. But I had a pretty good motivation this time...was diagnosed with an ovarian tumor and had surgery to remove it earlier this year - we spent about 3 weeks pretty well convined that it was cancerous (and a rare and aggresive type at that) due to the symptoms I was having, I think the doctor even thought so initially since I had some bizarre symptoms, not typical of a benign ovarian tumor. So when the biopsy came back benign I felt like I was given a second chance at....well, everything. That was all the motivation I needed to WANT TO make myself live a healthier, happier life. Not every day of my diet has been necessarily happy or easy, but I know I'm on the right track, and even when I do fall off and eat the junk food and candy (which I DO! we all do), I can start new and do better the next day.

Some people find their motivation in simpler ways, but I was stubborn and I guess I needed a bigger wake up call. You will find your motivation again! Don't let the past days get you down - nothing you can do about it now! Forget the past snacks and mistakes, focus on today and what you can do today to do your best!

Happy Birthday Karen!! Hope you have a great one and enjoy that cupcake! That is a great idea to get a cupcake - like the 'no leftovers' idea!:thumbsup2

Thanks so much for the link to the SB Forums!! I love to read stuff like that and that will help a lot! Day 1 went fine, found myself a little hungry by dinner time. I ran before dinner (3.5 mi) and felt okay, a little tired but nothing terrible - could be from not drinking much water all day either - I need to do better on that, epsecially now. Weighed myself this morning and it was down 2 pounds from yesterday - I'm sure it's water weight though, drank a ton last night and could tell this morning after several trips to the bathroom! Feeling good though, hope to do a short run tonight.

Well I'm only on day 3 of South Beach and I've already cheated.:headache:

Day 1: decent, I ate good, took a 3.5 mi run and it was okay, I was a little tired, but not bad.

Day 2: I didn't seem to eat that much, I had a hard time even getting to 1000 calories on both days 1 and 2. Ate and drank milk about 2 hours before going running - I did a 4 mile run and it went great - I felt good and had lots of energy.

Day 3: I just want to eat normal again. Felt a little queazy this AM, even after scrambled eggs w/ham and cheese for breakfast. Felt tired most of the morning, drank lots of water hoping that would help...it did a little. I was able to make a great salad for lunch and I ate a lot - filled for rest of the day. By dinner I was wishing I could eat a normal meal with my family. I cheated and had a Kashi cookie. No run tonight.

I am down 3 pounds in 3 days, probably all water, although I'm drinking water like crazy to avoid losing all water! Not sure if I'll be able to keep this up, although I like many of the principles of the diet itself in the long run, I have no idea how I'll manage 11 more days of this, including the holiday weekend. I hope for a better day tomorrow, I think if i can make it a few more days (and no more cheating) that maybe I can make it through 2 full weeks. I can't wait for Phase 2!

If you don't think you can stand it in phase 1 I'd move to phase 2 which is where you're supposed to lose the majority of your weight anyway. Many runners, and pregnant or nursing women chose to start at phase 2. Phase 1 is mostly to get rid of the sugar cravings.

I couldn't make it through without chili (beans give you good fiber & energy), plain greek yogurt and fudgsicles.

Annndddd I was horrible with eating the past two days with birthday celebrations :guilty: Tuesday was sushi and last night was burgers and cupcakes. Oh well, back on track today (minus the cupcake I have left that I plan on eating after dinner). We leave for the lake to visit DBF's fam tomorrow night. That will be the real test... being good at the lake! AH!

How did everyone's week go? Pretty quiet on here this week...hope everyone is doing well!

Today I weighed in, but I am taking todays weigh-in with a grain of salt....while I'm thrilled with it, I am a little leery of it being water weight, or that is won't stick. I'm down 4.5 pound since Monday. (3.5 from last weeks weighin).

I did have a decent week, ran 3 times including a 7 miler last night that I did end up of walking a lot of! Ran the first 3 miles well, then my legs just died, I felt like I had so strength. I walked/jogged intervals to mile 4 back to my house and got a huge drink of water. I went back out and having that water helped a lot, was able to run about 1.5 really strong, then again I fizzled out and did intervals of walking the 1.5 back home. So, I'm glad I did it but disappointed that I didn't have the energy to run it all. My legs were killing me when I got home and pretty sore all night.

Thanks Karen. Day 3 was the worst for me, I was pretty down, but yesterday went much better!! I haven't been craving sugar too much - but bread, crackers kind of stuff. And I have missed having fruit, which is weird since I'm not a huge fruit eater, there are only a couple I usually eat.

So what I've decided to do for the weekend is allow myself 1 fruit serving and 1 bread serving a day - so slowly start working into Phase 2. I went and bought some 100% whole wheat sandwich thins/flat buns, and some 100% WW wraps - this will make it much easier for me to have some sandwiches and things that will allow me to eat a fairly normal meal again!

OOhhhh..fudgsicles...I never did get those! I know what you mean about having a go-to food. I've been living on this one cabbage salad I have a recipe for - love this salad! I'd be starving without it - ate it for lunch the last 2 days and will be having it more over the weekend.

Hope everyone has a great 4th! Heading out camping today and it should be a fun weekend!

I had the best. run. ever. this morning!! :cool1: I woke up early to do 4 miles because DBF and I are leaving for the lake as soon as I get home. I'm not normally a morning runner, but it was sooo beautiful out this morning. In the 70's which we haven't seen at any time of the day for months! I didn't look at my pace but kept track of my miles and ended at averaging 10:10 miles! The fastest I've ever run was 2.5 miles at a 10:12 pace and I was really trying hard. I average 3-5 mile runs at 10:42 so I was excited to see 10:10 :)

I'm almost all packed for the lake and I have my running stuff with me! Goal is two good runs but it's very hilly around there so it will be something new for me. I always run on flat roads/trails.

Yesterday was horrible for eating- all meals were good then I had another cupcake and I made brownie bites for the lake and had two "fallen soldiers" :headache: The great run kind of made up for it maybe? ;)

The lake house is full of goodies and bad foods so I'm going to try to be somewhat good ;)

Happy 4th of July everyone!!!

MMQ~
Your problems with your legs are likely due to lack of glycogen stores. I had the same thing. I reintroduced oatmeal into my diet for breakfast and the pain totally went away. I even kept the rest the same (pre cupcakes that is ;)) and all that pain/sluggishness went away. I really think phase 2 will be good for you. You'll likely gain a little water weight from glycogen stores but not the entire 3.5 lbs you lost. Keep up the good work and have fun camping!! :goodvibes

Thanks for the info Karen! Congrats on your great morning run!

Well, my weekend started out well and ended up disasterous. Friday and Saturday I did well msotly sticking to the diet, 1-2 little cheats (alcohol one day, smores the other) but my meals were all good. Sunday it fell apart at the cookout with my family - I ate all the normal cookout fare - I did have a turkey brat but splurged on potato salad and strawberry shortcake. Monday was just as bad, ended up getting ice cream from DQ. Oh, and kids got bags full of candy at the parade and I have been in that bag like every 5 minutes. Ugh, horrible weekend. Up 2.5 pounds today.

I have not ran or worked out in 4 days!! :scared1: Hope to go tonight but we are in a rainy pattern here again and expecting rain the next 3 days. I have to get at least 2 good runs in before Saturdays 10K! I'll be lucky to just finish it at this point!!!

How was everyone else's 4th? Am I the only one who completely fell off the wagon???!!!

I did pretty good over the 4th. Splurged a bit on cookies and taffy, but didn't inhale everything in sight like I usually do. Kinda had some extra motivation, though. The place where I got my tattoo (owned by Boyfriend's best friend) made up new business cards. One of the pics they used was of my new tat on my side. :thumbsup2 With my flubbery love handles and stretch marks hanging out for all the world to see. I had been slacking at the exercise and was retaining water like Hoover Dam that weekend. At least my face isn't in the picture. I'm glad they thought my tattoo looked good enough to be an advertisement, but would it have killed them to hook me up with some photoshopping?

I'm getting reeaaalllyy close to my goal weight. Tried on the test shorts today and could close them easily with only a little bit of muffin-top hanging over. :woohoo: Couple more weeks ought to do it! As long as I don't go on a binge and blow it, which I am totally capable of doing.

kolohe lady -- can we see your new tat? i was going to ask when you shared you got it b/c you seemed so excited, but i thought maybe i'd seem creepy. but now since it's on a business card for the world to see....???? one day i'll get my courage up and get one...

i am definately sad to say i am definately on my upper end of the scale. i did resume workouts 2 days ago and having been cutting back on my intake. i was going to sugar detox - but that just isn't real for me. so i'm working on cutting my portions in half (of sweet snacks) and nothing after dinner. also, no alcohol for little while, i think that should help me drop a couple easily.

Hope everyone's week is going well!

Weighed in today and was happy/surpirsed to see I'm only up 1 pound from last week - which is a complete gift because I ate horrendous all week and only made it out for 1 run this week. Just a bad week for me - kids's candy and I really did not watch my portions or count my calories this week. So, still down 2.5 from 2 weeks ago before I started South Beach, so some of what I lost last week did "stick", not just all water.

Tomorrow is my first ever 10K and I feel a little less prepared than I'd like to be, having only run once (4 miler) this week. But, I'm going to go and do it, I'm sure I'll finish it, I have a goal of finishing in 1:06, or at least under 1:10. Weather is looking to be really nice tomorrow morning, so that will be good.

After the run tomorrow my goal is to get back on South Beach diet much more strictly - I'm about 3.5 pounds away from my initial goal weight and my goal has always been to be at goal by my wedding anniversary, which is now 4 weeks away. Gotta kick it in high gear now - I'm cutting it close!

Kolohe - I'd love to see the tatoo too if you want to share a picture!

Hope everyone has a great weekend! :thumbsup2

Hi! Hope everyone had a good weekend. I ran my first 10K on Saturday, and it wasn't the race I was hoping for by far.

It was a very warm sunny morning, race started at 8am. I got there, got my stuff and got to the start, that all went fine. They started the race and I felt awesome, then a half mile into it we had to all go back for a restart. They took the wrong path (were doing the course backwards) and the 5Ker's missed their breakoff point, so they restarted everone. So we walked .5 mille back to the start, waited 20 more minutes in the heat and they restarted us. By this time everyone was hot, sweating, and there was no water at the start. So we started again, by the time I got to the first water station at mile 1 it was out of water, and there was no water until mile 3...I new I was going to be struggling the whole way. By mile 2 I had to stop and walk a minute. Thankfully a few awesome homeowners had their hoses out and were spraying those who wanted it as you ran by - I've never been so happy to be sprayed with a hose - it felt so good!

I made it to 3 and got a little water, could have used a lot more. I hit mile 4 at 43 minutes and I was pretty happy I wasn't too behind - on track to finish about 1:06, but then I started to fizzle out. I started feeling weak, light headed and like I coudn't catch my breath, was oddly overcome with goosebumps. We were on a blacktop trail and the heat was intense, air was thick, no breeze. I walked a lot of mile 5, jogged a few short stretches, and finally got to the mile 5 water station, where I chugged 4 cups of water and dumped one over my head. After that I felt SO much better! Was able to jog most of the last mile back, legs were beat but at least I had gotten some water and some energy back. :thumbsup2

So I finished at 1:11, 5 minutes over my goal, placed #235 out of about 290. To say I was disappointed in an understatement. :guilty: I don't know what it was - it if was the extra mile from the restart or the lack of water (even thought I drank a ton before the race) or just that I was not physicially prepared to do it, but this 10K kicked my butt...I walked a lot more of it than I wanted to. Reality check I guess. I don't really feel like I accomplished my goal with this 10K since I felt like I struggled through the entire thing, so maybe I'll have to try another one.

Once it was over I kept thinking that I let myself quit and give up and walk as soon as it got difficult, and that I could have pushed myself though. I dont' know why I let myself walk so much of it, at the time I just felt like I couldn't go on, but once it was over I felt like I could have done more. Anyone else ever have that?

Um... every race? I've done three races- an 8K, 5K and 10K (in that order) and I have felt the same way each race. And to my knowledge, so has DBF and most of the people I've run with. You always feel like that afterwards I think because you're not in the moment anymore and you don't really truly "remember" the pain (someone before likened it to childbirth ). It's totally normal and that races sounds horrible!!! :scared: Having to start over and then pushing it back to a hotter time in the day doesn't help either. And no water?! I think you did great for what was given to you but I'd be lying if I didn't say I'd be disappointed too. I also find I push through a little harder if it's a bigger race. I think it's a great accomplishment to have done it though! And go ahead and try another 10K in the fall if you want :thumbsup2 Are you doing the Princess Half?? I can't remember.

My eating has been less than stellar lately - mostly last week and the 4th long weekend killed me. I did well over the weekend though and didn't gain, and I've planned my meals for this week to keep them at 1200 calories. I ran 5 miles on Saturday for the first time since my 10K in May so that was good! I felt horrible the last mile because it had gotten really hot but I pushed through and pretty much matched my 8K time from March.

Plans are to be good this week and strict SB. DBF and I are going to the outer banks this weekend though so I know we'll be eating out a lot!

I know, time to stop wallowing over it and move onto the next...not every event will be all wonderful and joyous. ;)

No Princess Half for me (not this year anyway)...I had been kind of considering doing a very popular local Half in mid-September - but after this awful 10K I'm having doubts. During the 10K that thought was right in my head - if I'm stuggling this much doing 6 miles how will I ever do 13? I'd have 10 weeks to train (although we're also in Disney for 10 days about 3 weeks before the Half, so I'd miss an important week of training right near the end - the week of my longest runs). I just don't know if 10 weeks is enough time, so I'm undecided right now. I know I'd like to do it, it would be an awesome accomplishment. I think I need a couple good runs to help me get over this completely deflated feeling I have right now and if I can get in a few weeks of good runs and start building up some mileage again I'll consider doing the half in September.

Great job on your 5 miler and pushng through the heat! I'm on the same page as you with eating - getting back to SB this week and need to do better this week. Glad to hear you haven't gained though! :thumbsup2 Do you have any plans for future races or a half?

Hello everyone! Have a good weekend? Mine was pretty lazy. I was planning on getting up early on Saturday morning to get my run in before it got hot. Unfortunately, didn't happen. Was totally drained after work on Friday night. Sat down for what was supposed to be a minute or two, but fell asleep with my work clothes still on. Had a hair appointment, so decided to just take the day off. I'm really good at excuses. Didn't do too bad on eating, until I bought some pita chips. Ate almost the whole bag in one sitting, plus the container of hummus I was dipping them in. Then went over to Boyfriend's, who had picked up some Subway. Ate that, too. VERY full stomach caused me to regret these decisions. Haven't felt like that since Thanksgiving!:rotfl: When will I learn?

Mommy McQueen, I think you did fine for your 10k. There's no shame in walking, especially without water when it's hot! Listening to your body is good, heat stroke/cramping is bad. ;)

I'm gonna try to put a link to where you can see my tattoo. Computers are not my forte, so here's hoping it works! http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=95483&id=64949302048&ref=mf#!/photo.php?pid=5732478&id=64949302048

If you need me, I'll be doing like a million crunches. . .
