Ok, we decided to scrap the Groundhog Day party (two of our best friends will be out of town), and do a Superbowl Party instead. I've already ordered some 2010 plates and napkins and some football lights.

We're not big football people and have only been to a couple other Superbowl Parties. We have a 65" tv, comfy sofas and chairs (and a 48" downstairs, if there's overflow). I plan on having soft drinks, beer, possibly a bottle or two of wine, a bunch of finger foods (and I also thought about making chili, but honestly am a little worried about spills), and a chart for bets.

Is there anything else I'm missing? Anything that's usually expected? We also have a deck with comfy furniture and we'll add a firepot and maybe a couple of new cheap fleece blankets for those who want to go outside to smoke.

What do you like or what have you always wished for at a Superbowl party (sorry, no strippers ;))?

Welll..what I'd like to have is the SAINTS in the Superbowl!!!

Your menu sounds good- party foods are always a big hit. I'd keep it simple- a few dips, veggie tray, variety of drinks, etc. We always make homemade chili along with BBQ hotdogs and hamburgers.

Maybe something Miami inspired, since the game is there?

Beer, munchies, big TV, comfy couches--sounds like you've got it covered.

The betting squares will be fun for people. You might want to think about a little area for those who would rather chat than watch the game. There's always a couple of them, and setting up a space for them helps keep them from getting bored or irritating the folks who are really into the game.

Hope you have fun!

My family hosts a huge superbowl party every year. I've learned a lot about what works and what doesn't.

Our most enjoyed food is 'build your own subs'...I make up the subs that morning (or order them from subway and do a party platter)I usually make up 5-6 different kinds and cut them in 4ths...and I have guests bring over their favorite sub toppings. I provide tomatoes, lettuce, onions, pickles, mayo and mustard. Other people have brought over different kinds of peppers, different special mustards, black olives, green olives, sweet onion sauces, you name it. It's fun, because we end up with a bunch of different toppings...and everyone can 'top their own'.

Other people bring over chips, crackers and dips, different beers, wine coolers, cheap-o wines that are light and fruity...We've found that actual wine has not been a success for our parties. So, we've decided to stick with wine coolers, and the cheaper bottles of wine (think fruitzia spelling??? or Arbor mist)...I am a wine lover, but not at the super bowl for some reason. One year we had about two different red wines, a rose wine and a white and no one really drank them- the one person that did had red wine and because of some one throwing their arms up to chear nocking her glass over on my new carpet- it wasn't good. Beer and wine coolers are more of a super bowl drink at our house...

We also do mini-bbq meat balls in the slow cooker, and someone ALWAYS brings over a meat, cheese and veggie platter because they work at the dairy place and they have the BEST fresh cheeses!!!!

A mistake that a lot of people make is having too much 'salty/savory' dishes and not enough 'sweet'...people get salted out and they're needing some sweet snacks to balance it out. Last year I did a cheesecake, someone brought brownies and someone just brought a candy mix- chocolates, nibs, gummy things...that all went over well.

Thanks everyone!

I hadn't really thought about sweets, but you're right. I'll be sure to add some. The sub bar sounds like fun. I told my two boys they could each invite one friend over (one's 16 and the other is 7) and they'd like the subs, too.

Wait, now I'm wondering if parents would mind that their kids would be at a party with alcohol. The boy my youngest will invite knows us and I think they'd be fine with it (they might even come, themselves), but the friend my oldest will probably invite doesn't know us at all. I really know nothing of the boy, either, other than he drives a hummer (!) and his dad is an attorney. My son says he's really nice, though.

wings and beef sticks and beer and big screen tv. anyting else is a waste. oh and a couple of portapotties would be cool.

What time should I be there? I'll bring a hot dip, something yummy like reuben dip or hot artichoke dip.

There was a thread earlier today that had some good ideas too. Have a great time! I wouldn't worry about alcohol around the kids as long as nobody gets too drunk and your teenaged guests don't try to sneak some.

I'd be kind of surprised if anyone objected. I think most people would expect a Superbowl party to include alcohol for the adults.

It's not much of a big deal around here--the kids drink soda, the adults drink whatever they want and no one really thinks too much of it.

It's a superbowl party and you live in KY. Beer is like water there;)

When I serve chili to big numbers at my house, I serve it in tall cups with long spoons. Cheesy I know but it helps lessen my fears of spill. I put out bowls with toppings and a bowl of chips/crackers and grilled dogs.

You could do build your own taco salads if you are wanting dinner stuff. Cook up some taco meat and maybe grilled chicken and serve up with bowls of toppings.

For dessert I'd go with simple foods like brownies and decorate your own cupcakes for the kids.

Don't let the men take over both tv's as alot of the women won't want to watch the game but still need somewhere to visit without the men.

I should be driving through about that time maybe. Let me know what time I should be there.

What is King Cake?

I'm hosting a party. We're having wings, lil smokies, bruschetta, veggie platter (broccoli, red pepper, cauliflower, carrots, grape tomatoes, and jicama with ranch dressing) hot artichoke dip, pita chips with hummus, chips and salsa, and then I may put out some of those frozen taquitos cut in half with guacamole...

For dessert I'm doing brownies, cookies, and then my roommate is making whoopi pies. Yum yum!

Drinks are sodas, water, and BYOB...

From Wikipedia:
New Orleans king cake
In southern U.S.A., the tradition was brought to the area by colonists from France and Spain. King cake parties in New Orleans are documented back to the eighteenth century.

The king cake of the New Orleans Mardi Gras tradition comes in a number of styles. The most simple, said to be the most traditional, is a ring of twisted bread similar to that used in brioche topped with icing or sugar, usually colored purple, green, and gold (the traditional Carnival colors) with food coloring. Some varieties have filling inside, the most common being cream cheese followed by praline. Popular bakeries such as Gambino's, Haydel, and Randazzo, feature original recipes and types of king cakes.

It has become customary in the New Orleans culture that whoever finds the trinket must provide the next king cake.

Very nice of you to make a cake FOR MY VIKINGS in purple and gold. ;) Good luck tomorrow Saints fans. Should be a great game.

I think your menu sounds great. Some things we often have are: buffalo chicken dip, sweet and sour meatballs in the crockpot, nachos and a cookie cake with the team most are rooting for.
