Ceclia - Amazing job with Chicago! Sorry you hurt so much afterward. I'm glad it was shortlived.
Joanne - Congratulations on the Boston Half. Let us know if you post any pictures or a report!
Congrats also to everyone who ran the RFFT. I can't function in running shoes when it's hotter than 60 degrees so my hat's off to all of you! Thanks for the pictures Suzanne.
It's been a while since I last posted so hopefully I didn't miss anyone!
I have been on the road more than a week between visiting family and business travel. I feel like a slug since I haven't been able to workout much.
I had a good PT session on Friday and confessed I planned on running the Humboldt Redwoods Half Marathon Sunday (yesterday). She told me not to run more than half of it (with walk breaks) and to walk the hills and whenever possible, stay on the soft dirt shoulder.
I nodded and smiled knowing my ego wouldn't let me only run half of it. Despite not exercising much and not running in over a week, I felt great starting out. I had a blazing pace (for me) and was at an 8:34 pace at the turnaround. It was around 56 minutes and I was shocked to see I was on pace to go sub-2:00!
For my knee's sake, I eased up on my my pace a bit after the turnaround but still felt great. Right around mile 11, I just fell apart. Maybe it was the fact I hadn't run more than an hour in over two months but my legs just turned into lead. They got really stiff and heavy and it was all I could do to run three minutes at a time. The good part was I felt great energy and cardio-wise. My legs just couldn't keep up with me.
I ended up dragging myself to the mat finishing at 2:07:06, only 23 seconds faster than last year. Mile 11 is where I shut down last year too but it was my stamina that gave out. Maybe next year everything will be working properly and I'll get closer to that 2:00 half.
My knee felt okay after the race. It wasn't until I went to my truck for some grub and tried to walk back up the steep hill to meet my friend that my knee started really hurting. It hurt the rest of the day but I downed some Ibuprofen and iced it a lot. It feels fine this morning although I sure hurt everywhere else!
In all, it was an amazingly beautiful course and I wouldn't miss it. It was neat to hear a few conversations from people who travelled so far to run this small race just so they could see the redwoods in their lifetime.
Here is me on the right:
