Super Coupon Guy

It was something I couldn't turn away from!! Crazy!!

I did think it weird to have ALL that food that WILL expire before it is consumed. Wouldn't it be great if an area food bank could have a volunteer like this?! Then the products would actually get used. The person could still get their "high" but the charity greatly benefits.

The thing that I don't understand is that whenever I see coupons in the newspaper they are like "$1.00 off" or ".50 off" something. So I'd think that in a $800.00 bill they'd pay about half of it; yet they pay like just like 6% or so of the entire bill. How is that possible?

I think that doing stuff like that and donating most of it would be a wonderful thing to do. And I personally wouldn't mind having tons of TP and paper towels for almost free. That'sa way to save quite a bit of money. But I don't see how they do it.

My understanding is that a hoarder would keep anything and everything "just in case" even if they cannot use it now or ever. But they might.

Couponers---the "sane" "extreme" ones, will rotate their inventory and what you see is their version of a store. Now--it is a ton of stuff, for certain and some of it is overkill. But buying something at a rock bottom price through the next sales cycle or the next set of expiration dates and then actually using them is not hoarding.

I have a stash of 20 jars of ragu...well, it is smaller now as we have been using it. It was on a great deal at over 50% savings and I had never seen it that low, so I stocked up. But I didn't stock up a year or 2's worth.

Why pay more than I have to, right?

Hoarding is the 33 years of toilet paper AND she is still buying it.

I don't see them as hoarders, so long as they are using and rotating their stock.

It is a combination of sales cycles, pricing books or on-line service that tracks prices (like grocery game) and being able to figure out that this is the lowest this item is available.

Now, in Florida--I didn't have double couponing, but up here I do. It seems since I moved to Virginia, I spend much less while getting more b/c there is more competition up here.

I haven't gotten 6%, but I have had some trips that got down to 35%.

It was a combination of a catalina--a printed coupon from a prior order for money off next grocery purchase, manufacturers coupons, frequnt shopping sales, store coupons....get the right competition and you can get a great score.

I'm happy with tracking 50% off...my best month I spent 40% of retail.

In Florida, I could never get better than spending 75% of retail.

There are even different sales run per given geographical area (for the same chain!) and different coupons available in the Sunday paper. There is a true marketing scheme behind it.

But essentially--they save that much b/c they figure out what the loss leaders are.

I have had an item or two bought at CVS where I will make money after rebate--due to a combination of things. That doesn't happen often.

My husband and I watched it this morning.

They are addicted to the rush of saving money. Yes, they look like hoarders but it's more than the hoarding, it's the rush.

I'd be interested to know more about the first lady who's whole life revolves around couponing and looking for deals. There has to be a reason WHY she is like that. Did she grow up poor or was she really limited in food choices? Something clicked her button to be this way. Her husband is really getting fed up with it so it seemed. I hope they last but I don't know.

The krazy coupon lady does it as a saftey net. It was mentioned that her husband lost his job and they lost their house and had to eat out of their stash for a year or something like that. I can see how that would impact her but at least she rotates and knows her foods.

The lady from Philly was interesting. I get that she thinks the coupons are money and I laughed at her trying to educate people.

The guy in KY was just odd. I have no idea why in the hell someone needs so much stuff. Again, it must be a saftey net but he needs a real hobby. He should take some of his saved money and buy a ping pong table or something but then he doesn't have anywhere to put it.

Now I do coupon and I take a bit of time to do it but to me time is money. In the end did the people really make back in the time they spent dumpster diving, walking all those miles, and spending 7 hours checking out stores. This doesn't count the gas spent going to all the stores or the money spent on extra coupons.

My opinion is that those people have all this food and plain and simple they are wasiting their money. They keep buying and buying and buying. Those people will NEVER use all that stuff. I don't care if coupon guy used a different tooth brush on every tooth in his head, he'd never run out of brushes. If it's not being used, it's being wasted and that wastes money.

I only saw part of this before I fell asleep, but the girl that was on there cracked me up. She bought like 9 cart loads of CRAP! Then the cash register broke! She was at the store for 6 hours trying to coupon. WTH? Who seriously needs 150 candy bars even if you get them for free? I hate to mention it, but her shopping is probably really not helping her weight issues either because she wasn't buying healthy food, it was all junk! How long will it take them to eat 250 boxes of pasta? Her husband looked like he was going to leave her when she started to put her crap in his man cave. :lmao: He was really peeved! :rotfl2: I don't think he liked having to carry all that stuff in from the car either....

I was thinking the same thing about the food she was buying and her size. Her DH was whipped, mine would never give up space like that for any obsession that I had.

More power to him (them), different strokes :thumbsup2. I enjoy a descent coupon myself, but sorry, I had to chuckle at his complusion, his trailer and carrying 2 brief cases full of coupons :rotfl2:. My DH likes to go grocery shopping with me, but I really think it's to get his select goodies :lmao:. I totally cannot see DH prancing through the store now with 5 clerks pushing the carts buying $5,000. worth for next to nothing, then boasting over his hoarding and savings . Not too mention, the stores here have limits of amounts you can buy. :upsidedow

Oh my, the addiction show, never again :sad2: ~ eating toilet paper, sleeping with blow dryers on and sucking your thumb at 24yo?!?! :confused3
God Bless them, and Dis'ners thought we had our share of problems. :scared1:

Problem is, he was taking everything, maybe someone else wanted to purchase something that he had.

And all of those people stocking up on Charmin, Hate to tell them but that is the wrost toilet paper you can use and will clog you plumbing quicker than anything, so all that money they save, may just be spent on Toilet paper.

PS, 2 different plumbers have told friends of mine the same thing, stay away from charmin.

I totally agree with you about not having to pay more than you need to but the they said the man had enough stuff for like 80 years worth of deoderant, 150 years of toilet paper, 50 year of tooth paste... He was definitely addicted to the buying and storing.

I love couponing. We just had a 10 cans for $10 sale on Campbell's Select Harvest. Went on-line to fine the $1.00 off two coupons and I now have 40 cans of soup for $20. :)

I would just like to figure out how to save a decent amount of money with coupons. They never seem to be for what I need, and if they are, the store brand is cheaper.

And the toilet paper eating lady? I swear when she started to cry and wiped her eyes with it, I started to gag, because I knew she was going to eat it. :scared1: (Thank goodness she didn't!)

I just want to know how you can be sitting around the house one day, and think to yourself, "Self, I think I'll eat some toilet paper today" and actually do it. I do like that she was down to twice a week at the end.

I know this is taking away from the main idea of the thread but....really? Crud! I only buy Charmin Basic - I HATE HATE HATE double/triple sized rolls. Our house is old and has built in tile TP holders, the super sizes don't fit them! I could buy the store brand regular size but that is like wiping with a wrinkled up Walmart bag!! Darn it all - but we DO have a huge problem with the line clogging. So now what? Who can point me to regular sized, soft and comfy TP?

ETA: And I wonder if a psychiatrist would say he was a hoarder or if he would be classified as OCD? It seems to me that clipping, cataloging, charting sales etc...could be a bit obsessive and, perhaps, soothing.

I don't know any guy that would give up his man cave for my obsession, unless maybe it's my hockey obsession...

She needs a new hobby! Walking could be a good place to start... :thumbsup2

Well that first lady buys her coupons. they said she paid $70. Well, why spend $70 on all those candy bars, gatorade, and all that other crap they didn't need.

I got some good deals when Nivea body wash/lip stuff, razors, and shampoo were on sale and they had some good coupons. Finally I had to ask myself if I really needed more of the stuff just because it's a good deal. Because you do have some out of pocket expense. I ended up taking a lot of my excess to our local women's shelter.

T, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and Matt!

ITA with Tina, I totally believe it is for the 'rush'. ::yes:: I think we have all been there and have gotten really good deals on items, not just groceries but clothes, electronics, etc and it really excites you ... BUT I believe these people highlighted in this show take it to the next level.

I just cannot figure out why they need all those items; items that takes over their entire home and garage? That has to be some level of OCD and hoarding.

I think they get their biggest rush as the items are all tallied and then they present the coupons and while each coupon is swiped they are THRILLED. Now after a bill of $800.00, they only owe $2.00!

Now the down side ... bringing it all home and putting it all away.

And then the cycle repeats itself. :sad2:

She was the worst of the 3. 3 rooms in their home are devoted to her crap and now she is taking over her husband's "man cave". She said she's missed out on spending time with her husband and on social events in order to shop. So i guess she has 3 addictions- hoarding, shopping, and eating because she was rather large.

Could be--but maybe he just doesn't like Fantasy football and this is his subsitute.

I think before writing it off as an obsession/addiction--what would happen if you substituted it with something you liked.

To me--it is his sport...so the act of the organization isn't so much of an issue.

He preordered the large orders.

He doesn't take everything off of the shelf. What we saw was staged.

Most of the high volume stuff he purchased, was in the back and producers requested to film him taking it off of the shelf.

He wasn't taking from anyone.

As for charmin--maybe that is what is wrong with our toilets. We've never had an issue in our prior house--but this house cannot handle the TP.

What is a better brand?

I do have a small stock of charmin to go through, but I would look for sales on other brands if it is better.

Charmin just had the big sales in the past several months.

Sorry, but those people on that show were all delusional. They are NOT saving money like they think. If you buy something that you DON'T NEED, you are NOT saving anything! I don't care if you buy $800 worth of stuff for only $12 (plus the cost of buying the coupons and the gas... nvm your time involved). You just WASTED $12!!

These people need to wake up and realize they are not saving money like they think...

What they didn't show was that those people were donating a large portion of their haul. They staged a lot of the show. I haven't seen it yet but I have been reading about it. Can't wait to watch it.

I have been learning to coupon. I am doing rather well. I stockpile some things to a certain extent. I bought cereal in September that we are still using, about to run out though. I paid next to nothing for this cereal. I bought like ten boxes for around $5. I am in Florida where they don't double coupons. Oh how I wish they would. But Publix allows overage. Sometimes I look like I am buying nothing but junk. I bought 8 boxes of instant Oatmeal and 10 boxes of whole wheat pasta. After sales, coupons, and overage; I paid a whole 91 cents. Not too shabby. I have bought around $45 worth of groceries for $4.05. I will use it eventually. There is nothing to last that long.

Totally agree! It becomes a problem when you miss out on doing stuff with others because of your addiction. It's no different than a drug addict who misses out on things or an alcoholic who spends all their time in a bar. Seems like the "man cave" was the only place he had to himself and she took it over. EEK!

Even if they are donating a large portion of their haul, at the one lady's house, they dragged all that crap into the house, so they did bring it home. Why bother staging that? She had crap all over her house. 3 rooms devoted to her stash? That's excessive and has to be real.

Well why would they chose not to show that to the viewing audience if they indeed do that??? :confused3

The last fellow, Nathan, he did say outright that the cereal (just the cereal) was going to the food bank but the other 3 people highlighted in the show did not mention donating anything they bought ... ??? (Unless I missed that.)

They all had the items on shelves in their homes all stacked some to the ceiling (with all their purchases) ... that did not appear to me that any of it was being donated.

Now if it is, AWESOME. But I don't think so.
