Anyone who is flying to Orlando in January should check out Sunwing, I just booked some nice airfare, about $500 less than it would have cost us regularly
Careful with Sunwing, my cousin just had major problems with them on a trip to Mexico where they tried to change her trip 2 days before she was to leave. Her Husband was already at the resort but they refused to send her there. She ended up re-booking through Westjet Vacations to try and get there which was more expensive but she had no other choice.
So yeah... Sunwing is definately a Use At Your Own Risk scenario as far as I'm concerned.
I just looked at the pricing. Cost of the 'flight alone' would have been $29pp return. For the 5 of us therefore it would be $145. But then add in all the taxes (and there are A LOT of them!) the total would come to over $1500! Then I went to the Aeroplan site to check on booking on points and it would have cost me over $500 plus 125,000 aeroplan miles. Now think about it. Why would the taxes be $1000 more on Sunwing over AC??? Methinks Sunwing is charging more than their $29pp airfare. I'll stay away because of their not-so-upfront pricing.
BTW, we're flying out of Buffalo anyway, but I was curious about the pricing.
Cost for three, taxes included, would be $2411.31.
Our cost from Syracuse is $1000.00 all in on Jetblue (now to be fair, prices have gone wayyyy up since we booked in August, and are now sitting at $1750 for the same flights).
Just looking at flights to St. Petersburgh/Clearwater in January for example from Pearson and Sunwing advertises $40 going southbound and $49 on the return. The $89 fare becomes a $373.27 incl taxes. Taxes are $284.27 or 319.4% of the $89 total airfare.
Fly out of Niagara Falls with Allegiant to St. Petersburgh/Clearwater airport and there are one way airfares for $32 or $64 total airfare which is $102.38 inc taxes. Taxes and fees are $38.40 which is 60% of the total airfare.
It's a no brainer to fly out of the US as far as I am concerned.

OMG!! I just did the same thing! We are flying out of Buffalo as well. I can NOT believe those taxes and fees!! I knew it was more expensive to fly out of Toronto..but come ON! That is ridiculous!! For the four of us to fly round trip from Buffalo it was around $750...it's over $1500 with Sunwing and our seats were $95 and $85 with Southwest. They are $69 and $40 with Sunwing...that's malarkey! ( I was gonna say something harsher, but I don't think I'm aloud to say that on the disboards )
If you don't mind me asking, why can't you fly out of Buffalo if you live in Southern Ontario? You obviously have the right documentation or you wouldn't be flying to Fl in the first place. If it's a transportation issue, I'm thinking it would probably be cheaper to pay a car service to drive you to Buffalo than to deal with those prices! Just thinking...

We always fly out of Buffalo. Always Southwest..for our upcoming January trip..keeping in mind that the prices have been higher then they normally are in January (We always go the same week..so I know what we usually pay)
Cheapest out of Toronto for us would be Sunwing...with taxes for the 3 of us would be $1119
I paid $634 on southwest...that includes $30 in Early-Bird check in Fee's...which we always pay for the return so we don't have to worry about checking in at the 24 hour mark!
Thats saves us $485...which almost pays for our flights...for our next trip!
Not to mention it takes us 42 from our driveway to Buffalo Airport....and an hour and a half from here to Toronto

My mother who is traveling with us doesn't want to drive almost 3 hours to Buffalo and back, in possible snowy/bad weather Cost isn't really a factor for me, I was just sharing for those, like us, who aren't going to fly from Buffalo.

I hear ya...too bad about all those taxes though...really puts a bad taste in your mouth. It feels like they are lying to you when they say such a low price.
i am a repeat Sunwing customer, personally im quite happy with them but their prices this year were just too steep...when i went to Cuba 2 years ago i paid 1580.00 for both of us all inclusive for a week...loved it! But trying to book disney flights , let alone a complete package...with them was awful...i couldnt believe the cost!
we ended up booking flights seperately with jetblue and will drive three hours from eastern ontario near ottawa to syracuse...but like op said the weather may be an issue...so we're driving there the night before and doing a local park and fly hotel...we booked for 4 people total cost 1380.00, leaving on a friday and back the following sunday...instead of the 7 day time frame...trying to book a package restricted us to being there only 7 days...this way i get the two weekends on either end...
We just booked Allegiant in Jan/Feb for 4 of us $677 return including 2 checked bags paid ahead of time!!!
I am sooooo excited. We have always driven down so this will be our first time flying. And it will also be our first time doing a disney cruise!!!!
