Sunscreen for Disneyland?

I've been hearing a lot about the harmful chemicals and carcinogens in most sunscreens. I also heard about a website from the Environmental Workers Groups called "Skin Deep Database". They test all sorts of health and beauty products and rate them on a scale of 0-10...0 being best and 10 being worst.
Eek! The Neutragena rates a 7. We use Soleo and California Baby(no fragrance...which isn't just for babies.) HTH!

ETA: Looks like some of the Coppertone(Baby and sensitive) ones rate a 3, which is pretty good. :thumbsup2

Who exactly is this "Evironmental Workers Group?"

I always forget my ears too! My part is usually safe because I wear a hat during the day. But I do have a hard time remembering my ears.

I'm thinking about finding a bigger hat (dorky, I know!) instead of my usual baseball cap.

not dorky! Hats are de riguer daily wear in Berkeley :).

(Nebraska, where I'm from, is hot, but I find the sun in California to be much brighter and harder on my eyes.)

How long ago did you live in Nebraska? Whereabouts?

I too hate greasy smelly sunscreen. But yeah, hate skin cancer and burnt skin even more ;)

My top pick for spray is Aveeno Continuous Spray

and

For lotion, Banana Boat Sun Wear . This is the best lotion I've ever tried. Light, easy to apply, and NOT greasy. I've had a hard time finding it in stores, but drugstore.com sells it online.

I've used Celazome Sun Care line in the past and it works great- one application lasts up to 8 hours which is great when we are out at the parks all day.

You probably won't need bug spray at DLR, we never did. :) But yes, we use sunscreen (lots of it) and take it in the parks for re-applications. LOL We have Banana Boat now but we've used Avon as well, they all worked great for us. Don't buy it in the parks if you can avoid it, run down to Target and get it there, along with water and maybe a few snacks. :)

Always, always, always wear sunscreen if you're going to be outside all day. Even if it's cloudy with a "low UV index". Yes, some sun is good for you. But all things in moderation. It's one thing to go for a half-hour walk, it's another thing entirely to spend 12 hours outside unprotected. I know several people who have had a chemical peel to remove precancerous tissue. Not fun at all. Like reliving every sunburn you've ever had all at once.

As others have noted, Target's "Up & Up Sport Continuous" came in as Consumer Reports' Best Buy. Walgreens Sport Continuous, Bananaboat Sport Perofrmance, and Aveeno Continuous also ranked high.

And replace it every couple of years. After 2-3 years, it starts to break down. I learned that one the hard way. :P

We use Aveeno Continuous Protection Sunblock Spray SPF 50, it's really easy to just spray on at the parks. You do need to remember to reapply though.

So I bought some of that Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry Touch that some mentioned here. I haven't used it yet but my husband put it on when he mowed the other day and he really liked it! So I'll be bringing that.

I have some Aveeno continuous spray spf 70 from last year so I might just bring that for the body (so easy to apply) and then the Neutrogena for our faces/necks.

Thanks for all the recommendations! Now if only my trip would get here faster!

Didn't get to read all posts so not sure if pp's said this already, but if you don't bring a cap remember to put sunblock on your hairline. I never get a sunburn so I figured I'd be safe. Found out the hard way I was wrong :guilty:

You definitely need sunscreen in September. Neutrogena makes a great sunscreen that is called Ultra Sheer Dry Touch. My dermatologist actually recommended it to me. They sell it at all major retailers and you can even do an internet search and find some coupons sometimes. It isn't the thick white formula and goes on really smoothly.

This sunscreen is amazing! It is so light and sheer that you feel like you have nothing on. It dries quickly and smells wonderful too! Mine comes in a spray bottle that isn't too bulky or heavy to carry to the parks, and it's quite easy to apply/reapply. I really recommend this too! I use it all the time in WDW and on shore trips, so I suspect if it can hold up to WDW, it can hold up to DL!!

bring sunscreen ,it doesn't matter if it's cloudy or late in september. the sun out here will still burn you even if you don't think it will better be safe then sorry!! lol :)

For anyone concerned about all the hype regarding traditional sunblock products being hazardous and carcinogenic (I know, right? They've been yelling at us to wear the stuff for years and NOW they tell us that the chemicals in it become carcinogenic when heated by the sun?!! What next?!!! Sheesh!), I noticed a few days ago that Burt's Bees has a non-chemical sunblock. Just FYI.

I'm not concerned about it. Maybe if I wore sunscreen ALL day EVERY day, 365 days a year. Then I'd worry.

But when I only wear it a handful of times a year, I don't think it's that big of deal.

I hear ya. I haven't bought any yet, either (we avoid being in the sun during the worst UV hours, my kids never get sunburned, and we rarely use sunblock). I do use it when at Disneyland, though, because we can't always avoid the worst UV hours.
