Sunpass with rental car

Since we will be in Florida for several weeks we purchased a Sunpass to use with our rental car. I know we have to opt out of the rental company's toll program and register the tag on the Sunpass app. Can we also call or use the Sunpass app to make sure the car is registered correctly and tolls are be applied to the Sunpass vs the car rental company? I just don't want thrifty to say a toll was charged to them and then have to pay their fees. Thanks

I sign up my rental car on the phone app. Sometimes it is tricky, I have to pull over to get it done, if I am driving. Hard to get a signal in the parking garage sometimes.

Thanks. I have had that issue in the garage as well. What I'm also wondering is if there is a way (once you add the tag) to make sure it's working properly. I think we could probably check the app to see if the first toll is applied to Sunpass but I didn't know how long it takes them to charge things to the Sunpass account. We just don't want to incur any fees from Thrifty.

Not sure you can "see" it working exactly...
you could have the Sunpass in advance, set it up online, see that money was added and available ( for some reason I recall it is Not immediate)
There is a phone number on the Sunpass... nice people too!!!

Or when thru the toll... it ll show.
Can't recall if there are Manned tolls at all of them now???


I think I'd try calling them and get the info directly from them before ur trip.

Those fees add up fast... the regular fee then the rental car toll fee ...
And xtra fees for certain numbers of days use UGH!!

you can pull up account activity on the app. When you get to a computer you can pull up and print your account activity .... therefore if Thrifty tries to mess with you, you have documentation; it shows every toll paid with time. The app also shows 'balance remaining' and this number is near "real time". while I don't watch it while driving, by the time I get home my balance is accurate .... home meaning to the house off the highway ... 20 minutes maybe.

This is why it is CRITICAL you get the tag in the system ... and get the $20 version NOT the $5 one.

Order the SUNPASS online and set up your account b4 you come to FL. And load the app to your phone pad whatever. With the app I can add a tag to my account (rental) in about 90 seconds.

I would warn that Dollar / Thrify have the WORST fees for this in FL ... the WORST fees if there is a boo boo. National Alamo Enterprise charge a fraction of what dollar thrifty does

p.s. I've loaned my transponder to friends to use in their pers'nl cars, and rentals and no one has had a problem. I've also just added a visitor's tag to my account and not even bothered to give 'em the transponder and they TOO had no problem just zipping thru the SUNPASS lanes. All their tolls showed up on my account.

say what ya want about SUNPASS, but IME it works as advertised and then some.

Thanks everyone. I feel so much better knowing Sunpass works so well. We ordered the transponder and I'll download the app before we leave. Since we'll be there for a few weeks my biggest worry is that Thrifty would try to charge us if a toll was missed by Sunpass. I know their fees are ridiculous but it was the best rate we could find. I've used them before with no complaints about the cars but other car companies offer much better toll rates.
