Thoughts??? :sunny: Comments??? :sunny: What has worked and what hasn’t??? :sunny: A few of us are quite fair. :sunny: TIA

Basically anything over 45 is useless (so the experts say) so we usually go with a 30 or so to start out the week and we reapply all the time. By the end of the week we may use 15 or so. I have not really found one brand to superior than another...we usually use Hawaiian Tropic or Coopertone.

We also found that the spray ones are a bit less messy.

I burn to a crisp unless I use sunblock. I personally use Coppertone Sport SPF 45 as it is waterproof and is the best I have found for me. If you have time before you leave, I would start trying different brands and find what works best for you.

Good Luck. The last think I would wish on anyone is a trip ruined because of a bad sunburn.

I was diagnosed with skin cancer last November and my doctor told me that anything over spf15 is nothing but a marketing gimmick. I told him about our cruise and he suggested spf15 and Water Babies is the best in his opinion.

Just thought I'd add my two cents in.

I've always done pretty well with Bullfrog. It's waterproof and it is suppose to last all day, but I reapply. You have to start out with 2 coats applied 30 minutes before going out. They also have a spray that works really well on the top of your head. Boy does the part line burn!! :headache:

HAve to secong the Bullfrog, ds (12) is extremely fair - the bullfrog gel actually coats your skin - he does great with it!

After living years in Phoenix (where the 1-10 “UV Index” often reached 13), the best course of action is to put it on after you shower every day. If swimming, be sure to use waterproof version. While often a bit greasy, there is no point if it washes off. You might also consider sunscreen lipbalm for your pocket.

I just bought Coppertone Sport 30 for my upcoming cruise. To say I'm fair is an understatement. I always joke the only way I get a "tan" is if I get enough freckles!

I bought the lotion and spray. Figure the spray will work good for my head. You'd be surprised how many times my hair part burned :( My problem is to remember to use it! Also bought a bottle of aloe so when I forget....

I buy a generic sunblock, the brand name is "NO AD", since they don't advertise. It sells for about half what Coopertone and Bullfrog do.
SPF 45 costs the same as SPF 30 and SPF 15, so I buy the SPF 45.

Last summer while in Hawaii I found Ocean Potion sunblock- the best stuff I've ever used! It smells great- not too "sunblocky" (my friend says it smells like chocolate oranges, lol) and the smell doesn't stick around all day, plus it absorbs right into your skin, so you don't feel all greasy. I now swear by the stuff!

I personally have had bad luck with NO-AD, each time I've used it, even with reapplying, I've burned to a crisp- OUCH!

I used to use Water Babies on my kids - and it worked fine here in New England for the summer. But last year on a trip to St Maarten in June, we used it on our 8 & 4 year olds, and our friends used it on their 9 year old. We reapplied every 3 hours or so - since they were in and out of the water - and our kids got terrible sunburns. I guess I should have read the label - Water Babies tells you to reapply something like every 80 minutes! READ THE LABELS. Since we had brought 2 bottles of Water Babies, I went and bought whatever they had in the gift shop that would last the longest. They had a Hawaiian Tropic - I think it was SPF 45 - but the key is it said it would last a long time (6 hours or so). Nevertheless, we reapplied every 3 hours to be safe. Big lesson learned for me. I should have known better but I assumed all "waterproof SPF 45" lotions were the same. BIG MISTAKE! :guilty: So read the labels, apply liberally and often. Personally I don't buy Water Babies anymore - by the time you reapply ever hour, the bottle is gone in no time.

For our cruise next month I bought Coppertone sport. I can't remember how long it was supposed to last, but it was the longest one I could find.

As a melanoma survivor, this is a BIG issue for me. Dr. recommends SPF 15 applied every hour to hour and a half. Reapply after swimming or heavy perspiration. Stay pale! :flower: :cool1:

i like bullfrog or coppertone.....the NO AD stuff I have never had any luck with, always burned when ever I used it and it was rated as poor last year when they published some sunscreen ratings in the paper.

wow....guess I am in the minority here.....I have used NO AD plenty of times for myself and my kids and it worked great. But I am not brand loyal, I am always trying different kinds. Still haven't bought any yet for our upcoming cruise in May, but will probably go with some sort of sun and sport sunblock for all of us.
Never heard of the Bullfrog brand that people are mentioning, but I will check into that.
When we went on RCCL years ago, I ran out of sunblock and the only kind they sold on the cruise was some sort of natural organic brand....I thought for sure that I was going to burn like crazy using it....but it worked great! I even gave it to my sister who is allergic to SPF, since it had no chemicals in it, this was the only kind of sunscreen that she could use. But I cannot remember the name of it or the brand.

We have had great success with No Ad brand sunscreen. The four of us run the gamut from pale to extremely pale (ha ha)...we all have red or blond hair and freckles....on 2 cruises using No Ad none of us have gotten sunburned. I start with the 45 and work down to a 15 by the end of the week. I will again be buying No Ad for our upcoming cruise at the end od April. :smooth: :smooth:

I like to use Clinique sunblocks. They are fragrance free and not greasy at all. I don't know if they sell a waterproof version though.

I have sensitive skin and the Clinique brand has never given me a rash as others have. It is not heavy and greasy so it feels like my skin can "breathe". My whole family uses the SPF 15 and we've never had a sunburn yet! We do reapply often. I like the spray version and I also by a lotion for the face.

Don't forget to apply to the tops of the ears!
