What have you read just lately that you'd recommend for a holiday read?

I've just finished "The Floating Island" by Anna Ralph. Quite a gripping story about a teenager who cannot walk following the death of his younger brother in an accident and of the intertwining relationships of the people caring for him.

Please add any titles you have enjoyed and a brief description - but no spoilers or discussions please as others may wish to read the books you recommend.

I've just read The Girl With The Drgon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson, DH also read it and we both enjoyed it. Its the first of 3 books.

I took a few books away with me and both DH & I really enjoyed the following:

Obstacles to Young Love by David Nobbs.
Absolutely the most enjoyable book we've read in ages - had us both laughing out loud but was still moving and well written. Starting in 1978 and continuing to the present day, it's the story of two teenage lovers whose paths continue to cross down the years... Now maybe we loved it as we were two teenagers who started dating in 1978 BUT it's just such a fab book, I'd recommend it to anyone...

The Complaints by Ian Rankin. Not as dark as some crime novels I've read lately, this really rattles along and is a great holiday read. Malcolm Fox is an Edinburgh detective who investigates corruption in his fellow police officers and is not a popular man. After successfully uncovering the extent of one popular officer's corrupt ways, his working life takes an unexpectedly complicated turn - more than that I can't say. This is potentially the first book in a new Rankin series now that Rebus is no more - so I hope to read about Fox and his sidekicks in the future...

Bad Things Happen by Harry Dolan. A intricate but seamless whodunnit with plenty of twists and turns and red herrings. I loved it, DH is still reading but asked me if Harry Dolan had written anything else... Anyway, here's what it says on Amazon: "David Loogan is leading a new, anonymous life in a new town. But his solitude is broken when he finds himself drawn into a friendship with Tom Kristoll, the melancholy publisher of the crime magazine Gray Streets - and into an affair with Laura, Tom's sleek blond wife. When Tom offers him a job as an editor, Loogan sees no harm in accepting. Then one night David's new boss phones him in a panic, asking him to come to his house immediately. And bring a shovel... "

I would very much recommend The Island by Victoria Hislop.

I just read a book which Nat lent me called Rich Girl Poor Girl which I enjoyed (Nat didn't but I did)

Oh! I have that but I haven't read it yet.

The last book i read was 'the short second life of Bree Tanner' - which takes about an hour- but still..I got my twilight fix again so it's all good!

I've just read Sacrifice and Awakening by S.J. Bolton.

Both are thrillers and I found once I'd started them, I couldn't put them down.

I've decided to go down the chick lit route for a week or two after a realy stressful time at work, and am currently reading The Truth about Melody Browne by Lisa Jewell.

I'm really enjoying it so far, it's about a woman whose house set on fire when she was 9, causign to lose all her memories from before then.

Now she's in her 30's and she went on a date to a hypnotist, which made her start havign flashbacks to the childhood she's forgotten.

It's pretty good, and I like that you learn the story as she does.

Zero brain power involved, but sometimes I think it makes a nice relaxed read, and the chapters are really short, which I also love in a sunbathing book. Plenty of breaks to stop for a swin/ice cream/drink.

I have just finished "America Unchained" by Dave Gorman ... really enjoyed it. It is a true account of a man's attempt to drive from one coast of America to the other using no chain restaurants / hotels / gas stations. :rotfl2::thumbsup2
