The job is at our college store selling t-shirts, etc, during home games. My boss suggested she wear nice pants, button-down shirt, no flip flops. I have a feeling she is going in jeans, probably a t-shirt and flip flops. Any ideas what you would suggest?

its not the same job, but when i was 17, i wore khaki pants and a nice shirt to my interview for the job i still have now..

I'm sure if she gets the job it won't be any big deal to wear jeans and flip flop but an interview is different. I don't think any of us that can wear business casual attire to the office would dress the same way for an interview.

To be taken seriously she needs to dress the part. I'd definitely go with khakis, a conservative top and shoes.

Well, the thing is job interviews can be different for teenagers. Some of them seem to be trying too hard. Like, I remember applying at some jobs, and these geeky kids were wearing suits and ties, and I'd just go in normal clothes and get the job. I would jeans, or khakis are fine, with a casual shirt, preferably not a t-shirt...although maybe acceptable for a young woman, and shoes...no flip flops...maybe sandles...but definetely not flip flops.

Nice pants and button front shirt with a collar. Or a dress.......
I think first impressions should be GOOD. Not sloppy. And I know that flip flops are popular and people wear them all the time, but they are SLOPPY (in my opinion). Dress up so you look like you care about getting the job. I would hire someone dresses nicely before someone in jeans and flip flops ......

She told me not to worry about it so I guess I will see what she is wearing in the morning and I'll try not to worry!

I think you hear that every so often from kids her age, LOL, and for some years to come. I still hear it.

Times may have changed somewhat but there are, I think, still some things that haven't and dressing nicely for a job interview is one of them. My manager has mentioned on several occasions how she pretty much writes off an interviewee who doesn't follow the basic rules of job interview etiquette: returning phone calls, behaving professionally, showing up on time, dressing sensibly, etc... Granted, I don't work in a college bookstore but I think kids today would be well served by practicing now for the "real world" they will enter soon enough. Best of luck to her.

and those words are still scary, LOL.
Your boss is right hopefully she makes a good decision.

I would agree that a nicer pair of pants (no jeans) a nice button down top and a pair of sandals or nicer shoes (no flip flops) would be fine.

Business casual. A dress is totally uncalled for. If she like to wear skirts, how about a skirt and button down. Even khakis and a button down as others have mentioned.

I go with casual pants, nice shirt and shoes...no sneakers or flip flops. I've seen kids come in for interviews in shorts and flip flops, jeans and sweatshirts...and surprise none are hired. (grocery store) I already work here and have an interivew for a new position, I will be wearing a skirt and blouse for it even though I've been here 13 yrs. and wear a uniform while at work.

Maybe she really doesn't want the job and is just appeasing you.
