We need to purchase our tickets as we are approaching the 60 day mark to get our Fastpasses. We will get 3 of 4 from Undercover Tourist. We were going to wait to purchase my college age son’s to make sure he could could actually go with us, We have it scheduled so he’d only miss a few classes, but that could change if he has any tests. But, if I don’t purchase his, he’ll have no FPs. What would you do?

I would buy with the expectation he could come.

I agree with bobbiwoz. If you buy his ticket and he can't come, you can save that ticket and apply the value of it to a ticket purchase for a later trip. If you're pretty sure that someone in your family will return to WDW at a later date, I think that's the best option so that you can book FPs for him along with everyone else.

What kind of ticket would I purchase, I thought they were non transferable?

They are non-transferable once they are used by one person. If it is never used, you can assign it to anyone.
So even if it’s assigned to a magic band it doesn’t matter if not started? Lastly does it matter if it’s an open or specific start date?

Does the new date specific tickets screw up any the reassignments to a different person? Does anyone know how Disney handles this?

If it hasn't been used, you should be able to use it towards a new ticket.

You can buy a physical ticket and not assign it to anyone until you know whether he’ll use it or not. Or an electronic ticket can be assigned to him, but if he doesn’t use it, it can be reassigned to someone else.

There’s a Ticket sticky on the Theme Parks board that can be very helpful in tricky cases like this. If you don’t find help in the first few posts, you can post your question and get recommendations from very knowledgeable folks.
