With gas prices so high anymore I thought we could share some ideas on how to save money on gas.

The obvious one is to walk or bicycle whenever you can! Another one is to make sure your tires are inflated properly.

What are you best gas saving tips? :moped:

Fill up only when it's cool outside - either early morning and evening. I've read you can save about 10% doing this.

Try to plan your errands for one trip to save on shorter trips.

Use online services or mail service as much as you can. You can buy stamps thru the mail and order things online which is pretty common sense.

Do an online search for the best prices in your area. I know our local tv stations and newspapers have some links to help look for the gas stations with better prices.

Other obvious one's - carpool, and/or use public transportation.

Don't move to London!!!!!!! ;)

Is it really high there? I overheard someone in the store saying they had just returned from Mexico and it was only $1.56 there, it was $2.36 here (Washington)! :confused3

Buy a scooter! Last time I filled up it was like $2.15 total and it lasts forever! moped:

Only downfall is I can't go on parkways... only goes 45MPH  :

sorry - freakish double post

Some other tips:

1) Make sure your tires are properly inflated

2) Try driving 5MPH under what you normally drive. You will be surprised at the amount of $$ you save by just slowing down those few MPH.

3) Use Air Conditioning with the Windows UP on the express way. When you have the windows down your car becomes a giant wind catcher and that will decrease gas mileage.

4) Use cruise control whenever possible!

Here's what my fiance, the car nut, told me:

Don't accelerate really fast. Gradually accelerate to the speed that you want. Since I drive a honda, he told me to not let the RPM's to read above 2750 (or whatever your RPMs read at 70mph) otherwise you will lose your fuel efficiency.

Don't idle for longer than 2 minutes (unless you're stuck in traffic :confused3 ) or else you will waste more gas than if you turned the car off and then turned it back on again.

If you can turn the ac off!!!

HTH,
Laura

The guys on Mythbusters TV show busted this myth. The minivan with the windows down and the A/C turned off went much farther than the minivan with the windows up and the A/C on. A/C sucks gas.

Hi
We have a Ford Excursion which everyone assumes is a gas sucking hog. Not true. We bought it with a Deisel engine, which is more efficient than gas, and then had our mechanic install a programmer( or a chip) that resets how the engine runs. It improved our mileage considerably from the factory settings. We went from getting 12/18 mpg to 18/26 mpg. You can check with your local hot rod shop or mechanic to see if your car has a compatible chip available. At about $300 it payed for itself quickly,

Discover has a gas card. You get 5% back when you charge your gas.
