Suggestions for traveling with SLR

I have a Digital SLR that I shoot in manual in and love. When doing DCL or WDW, I usually take a point and shoot as I'm always worried about what to do with the SLR to keep it safe in the room and or on excursions/rides but then I'm disappointed when I can't get the shots that I know I could have gotten with the SLR.

What suggestions do you have with traveling with an SLR? Keeping it safe, dry, etc...

Thanks!

First off, I would talk to my insurance agent about a special rider for your equipment. They are dirt cheap and the peace of mind is priceless.

As far as storing the equipment while on vacation, I usually just lock it in the room safe. Last trip to Disney, I took a Canon 7D and S100. I had a few "picture days" where I used the 7D. The rest of the time I used the S100. I had no problem storing the 7D (inside a Crumpler 5 MDH case) in the safe.

During my last trip to WDW, I carried my SLR and a couple of lens with me during most of the trip. I used the Lowepro Slingshot (there are different sizes of the Slinghshot model I believe the model number of mine was 302AW).

The bag was comfortable, and it was easy to access my camera equipment at any time. I was also able carry that bag on all the rides...and the 302AW is not a small bag.

I realize most folks do not want to carry their DSLR and lenses in the parks, but I figure if I am going to spend all this money on the camera body and lens I want to use that equipment at one of the most photogenic places on the planet.

Good luck on your search. :thumbsup2

I have taken my dSLR on numerous to WDW & elsewhere. I have a long strap (MOD brand maybe - long, comfortable & whimsical print) and usually wear it crossbody so it it easy to access when wanted, and keep it out of the way when we are walking etc.

If I opt to put it in a bag for a ride, I have a Tamrac Adventure 7. I can put the strap around a leg to keep it with me on the rides. The bottom section is for the camera, lenses, etc. I have a Nikon D90, 18-105, 11-16, 70-300 and 50mm lenses, and I can fit all of them in the bottom of the bag - along with a small flash - without issue. It is a bit crowded, but I don't always carry all of the lenses at the same time. The top of the bag is a standard backpack, and I carry stuff for the kids, DH, myself in there.

I usually keep a ziploc bag in the backpack in case of rain, etc. The backpack is pretty weather resistant, but the ziploc is just added protection.

Good luck in finding something that works for you. There are all kinds of options out there.

Oh, on a trip to the USVI I used one of the cinch top backpacks, and I just threw a sweatshirt in the bottom to protect my camera - and I never had any issues. But, I also only carried the 70-300mm as an extra lens on that trip.

WDW Camera Equipment 2011 by Gianna'sPapa, on Flickr

This is the equipment I bring. We have two camera bags a Lowepro Slingshot 200 AW and Lowepro Fastpack 200 for travel. The DW has a Built neoprene camera bag that she carries in the parks. I'm the pack mule and carry the Fastpack. I always carry my camera out on a Black Rapid strap. I have a dry sack (purchased at Cabelas) in case of rain. I haven't had any problems leaving my gear (stashed) in my room. I usually put the computer in the safe. I agree with the others to ensure your equipment is insured.

I'm of the opinion that what is the sense in having decent camera equipment if your not going to use it.

Hi! Does anyone know anything about this camera bag?
Koolertron(TM) Canvas DSLR SLR Camera Shoulder Bag Backpack Rucksack Bag With Waterproof Cover For Sony Canon Nikon Olympus
They sell it at Amazon.

I am looking for something just like it to carry my Nikon D50 with only one lens...I don't need anything huge and just can't seem to find a "this is perfect bag for you to shlep your camera around WDW with three young kids!"

Advice? What do you think??
