Hi all (especially my friends across the ditch...)

We are heading to Singapore for the 'weekend' of Melbourne Cup (ie first weekend in November), and DH realised that if we added a couple of flights on the way home, we could quality for platinum with AAdvantage :thumbsup2 So now we have one night in Auckland 'on the way' home :rotfl:

We arrive in Auckland just after 3pm on a Tuesday, and leave just after 1pm the following day. Probably won't bother to hire a car or anything, and we might stay somewhere closer to the airport than the city depending on what's around and how far it is etc (as you can see I've really done my research :lmao:).

So any suggestions?

I wouldn't stay near the airport, it's not a very nice area.
If you are just keen to relax in a really nice hotel, I love The Langham. The club rooms (and more particularly the club lounge) are excellent. It's a quick 5-10 minute walk to the top half of Queen Street, but a fairly steep uphill walk back to the hotel. I think it also has free shuttles to the bottom of Queen St, but don't quote me on this.
If you aren't planning on spending much time at the hotel, a better choice of location would be near the waterfront. The Hilton is an excellent location, but I've never stayed there as IMO it's overpriced. The Stamford Plaza is a reasonably good location and has some good specials.

I'd agree with the Langham. Their restaurant - Eight - is great for either dinner or breakfast.

I wouldn't stay out by the airport either, there isn't a lot to do there other than mini golf. Although, if you don't have a car it definitely would be easiest. There is an airport bus between Queen St and the airport that runs around every 15 minutes from early until late so that's a good option if you don't mind taking a bus. I think it's around $20 round trip.

Thanks for your help. We think we'll stay somewhere on the waterfront and just wander :thumbsup2 Think the Hilton might be overpriced for us too! Will check out the Stamford Plaza.

I'd check out wotif.com, and maybe Trip Advisor to get some feedback on places wotif show good prices for :)

(Am a Kiwi but it's been years since I stayed in Auckland city - was a lovely spot for our wedding night but I'll be darned if I can remember the name lol!)
