Next January the week before the MLK holiday (DS doesn't start college until after that), we're planning to do a short three day trip to Hollywood and Disneyland. We'll fly into LAX on Monday and fly back Friday (coming from St. Louis). Here is what I am thinking. I welcome your suggestions/'thoughts. It will be me and my 20 year old. Maybe my sister-in-law too. DH will stay home -- Hollywood and Disneyland are too cheesy for his taste.

On arrival night, I was thinking my best bet for relatively inexpensive transportation, given multiple locations, would be to rent an intermediate sized car.

DS likes wax museums, so we'll probably hit the one in Hollywood on arrival night. For lodging, thought I'd book the Hilton Garden Inn in Hollywood for one night (looks like a reasonable option that fits in our budget).

For full day 1, I was planning on the two hour paramount studio tour, a two hour break for lunch or whatever, and then one of those 2 to 2 1/2 hour Hollywood tours -- star homes and other highlights. I was going to check out of our hotel right after breakfast and after our two tours do anything else that strikes our fancy. After that we'll drive to Anaheim.

In Anaheim, I was thinking of staying at the Fairfield Inn for three nights, paying extra for a theme park view room, as DS especially is really keen on views. It looked like a good option to me that fits in our budget.

On lodging: A big deal to me are comfy beds. Both the chains I selected have done pretty well for me on that front in the past FYI and that and price within my budget was a big reason for my selecting those. The onsite hotels look fab, but aren't in my budget.

I was thinking of going to the parks the remaining two days of our trip and getting the park hopper option. Worth it to have the hopper? I was also for the morning of the second day was going to splurge on the Walk in Walt's footsteps tour? Worth it with only two days? I am thinking yes, as we mostly just like to do headliners/highlights at most of the WDW parks, and I'll probably take Unofficial Guide advice regarding what attractions to hit (adult/teen highlights). I am also hoping that mid January will be a relatively mild time for crowds. That's the whole reason for visiting then. Most should be back in school, we will be going during the week avoiding locals going for the weekend (a Wednesday and Thursday), but DS is off till the Tuesday after MLK day. Note I have been to Disneyworld 39 times since 1971, but only to Disneyland once back in 1964 when I was four, so we are WDW experts but Disneyland/California Adventure novices for sure. WDW is just so much closer. DS, though, and I would just love to try Disneyland, hence our doing a mini trip here. Our main trip every year FYI is something all of us including my husband will enjoy (often a summer trip to the Mountains or something like that.)

I was also going to try touringplans.com to plan a tentative itinerary for the parks (at least for our must dos) and then play it by ear after that. I hear, though, the Unofficial Guide people aren't as spot on at Disneyland compared to WDW (They really know their stuff at WDW). We'll have a pretty relaxed itinerary, though, so I don't think that will be that much of an issue.

I appreciate your suggestions and any advice you might have for us. We are really excited that we're really and truly going to finally make it to Disneyland!

Your plan looks good, the only thing I would say is to be wary of traffic. When you're driving down to Anaheim after doing all the Hollywood stuff, if you go at the wrong time you could sit in traffic for 3 hours, no exaggeration. So you either want to head down there before 4 or after 8.

Also, I personally wouldn't do the star homes tour, but take that time to go to Santa Monica and see the beach and the pier.

Finally, the one thing I recommend to all visitors is to go to the Griffith Observatory. One of my favorite places in LA.

I don't know about park hoppers in your case. With only two days, and when you haven't been to the parks before, I'd seriously consider skipping the hopper. And I love hoppers. That way you can concentrate on one park a day, and since you aren't going to be there during crowded times the park hours won't be as generous. I find extended park hours is when I really utilize park hoppers (i.e. When DL is open till midnight). If you can fit a tour in your budget as a splurge and it's something you really want to do I say go for it. But know what you're getting, I believe I saw reports the tour no longer includes Walt's apartment so if that's a big draw for you I'd look into that deeper before you book. So my main take away for you is save the park hopper money and use it on something else for your trip! I'm no help on the Hollywood portion, but when it comes to a car rental that sounds like a good idea. I always think a car rental is a good idea in SoCal if your going more than one place.

i would get a 3 day parkhopper. And on Tuesday, after you have done your tours, i would go to the disneyland parks. i would suggest you check out the parade/fireworks or WOC on Tuesday evening.have a nice dinner and then tour the parks. i would get the park hoppers. January is slow season, and on wednesday you could probably do most of the rides in DCA by dinner. then head over to DL for the evening. then spend thursday in DL.

I would do the Warner Bros Tour as opposed to Paramount, but read the reviews of both on Trip Advisor. I agree with a PP -- I'd skip the star homes tour, unless your DS is particularly interested in that. You could do the observatory, Santa Monica, or even just stay in the Hollywood/Highland area (where Madame Tussaud's is) and then head down to Anaheim earlier, as someone else suggested.

And I absolutely second what someone said about traffic. Either leave by 3 or stay for dinner in L.A.

Thanks so much for all the feedback! Lots of things for us to look into. Great tip to leave for Disneyland before 3 p.m. or wait till later to avoid the crazy LA traffic. I really appreciate your posts.

I've talked to DS and looked into many of your great suggestions. Just wanted to do a follow-up post and say how helpful your suggestions have been. // It looks like we'll arrive on a Monday around 12:30 to LAX, so we should be to Hollywood around 3 or so. We'll have time to look around and do Madame Tussauds (DS likes these a lot). I checked out the Griffith Observatory website, but they aren't open on Monday, and we have other priorities for Tuesday, but it does look like a great place. We've done lots of planetariums before though, and night sky telescope programs at Bryce and the Grand Canyon. Occasionally too, we'll go to the St. Louis Astronomy club events on Friday night at our local science center too. // We are taking your suggestion and skipping the star homes tour. I thought the Warner Brother's studio tour looked great, even better than Paramount, but DS still wants to do the Paramount one instead, as they made his favorite movie, Titanic, and he figures there might be some mention of this. After the tour, we'll go over to the Santa Monica pier and beach for lunch, to look around, maybe do some rides if they are open or the aquarium. Then we'll head to Anaheim by 3 p.m. if not before // For our two days in Anaheim, OMG do ride wait predictions look short, we decided to skip the Walk in Walt Footsteps tour. We'll have our touring plan highlight attractions in each park that we'll do from 10 a.m. till about 2 p.m. or 3 p.m. each of the days. I was really surprised that even with a lunch break, how easy based on touringplans.com predictions it is to get these in. And obviously we have lots of extra time if lines are longer than predicted and we divert. For one of the days, we'll leave the park and do the Titanic attraction, then come back to do a few more things if we have extra time to kill and the night time show. For the other day (switching to the Anaheim Desert Inn for an indoor pool and hot tub), we'll go back relax there and have dinner and then come back for the evening. (Parks most likely will only be open till 8). That works for me, though, as that's 10 p.m. Central Time. // Anyway sounds like a blast to me -- super fun // Still haven't decided about hoppers (think I'll get the base tickets and upgrade there if we feel like hopping).

Oh and FYI here is our reasoning for picking Disneyland and CA Adventure over Universal and Knott's. We've been to Universal Orlando very recently and while very nice and much improved since 1989 when it opened with the two new HP areas, etc. we like WDW more. It's sort of for us a been there, done that, and bought the T-shirt. And for Knott's we've been numerous time to Cedar Fair's flagship park Cedar Point with the 18 coasters (used to meet relatives who live near there every summer). And I hate to say it but I'm a 55 year old former roller coaster junkie (but now I can only do smooth and fast -- only maybe 5 of the 18), and Disney is more my speed, so am picking the parks that I'll be able to do most of the rides at. And DS's main reason to want to go to the LA area is to check out Disneyland. That's perfect for me.

Paramount studios tour has more of an 'old hollywood' feel. Warner brothers is good if either of you are big fans of Harry Potter or Friends. I took the paramount tour a few years ago, there was no mention of titanic on our tour, but the guides seemed good about sharing info if customers told them about favorite shows or movies.

I'd suggest taking time to see a movie at graumans or el Capitan. The brief tour of graumans is also worth it.

Mel's diner is a good place for lunch if you like diner food.

Also, just be a little wary of yourself while walking around Hollywood. Keep your eye on your wallet or purse. There will be lots of costumed people. Feel free to request pictures, just know that they do expect tips.

There was no footage from Titanic actually shot at Paramount so there might not be anything to mention. You might want to call ahead to see if there's anything there like memorabilia if you think he'll be disappointed.

I wouldn't rely on projections for wait times as they're based on past years. Crowds have been growing for years and this past year especially due to the 60th. Then add in the last 2 years with the extreme popularity of the Star Wars race weekends, you'll at a minimum see the crowds really starting on Thursday. This past year the combination of the 60th, a newly announced So Cal ticket offer, the extension of some of the holiday overlays and the closing of several attractions increased the crowds from the 1st through MLK weekend. Even with the 60th ending, don't count on that trend stopping next year.

The inside Griffith Observatory is closed Monday, but the views and grounds are not. I still highly recommend walking around the beautiful area and seeing the great views of the Hollywood Sign, downtown, and Hollywood.

I think your itinerary sounds fun and doable. My other suggestion -- use the Waze app when you're driving around in L.A. It can save you a lot of time.

Thanks all!

Ohiostate -- Sounds like Hollywood and the people in costumes may be a bit like Times Square in NYC. We were just in that area in NYC last week for a mini stay after a New Jersey relative visit, taking advantage of what by NYC standards are low hotel prices for a mini NYC attractions/broadway get-a-way. (Times Square, though, actually felt calm in January compared to May or summer lol.) I had the Chinese theatre on my list to at least stop by. Would love to take the tour / will check it out and do the tour if timing works.

SMD and Ashley -- appreciate hearing about Star Wars weekend which could up crowds and how nice the view are from the Griffith Observatory area (DS is a photographer, so I need to go there for sure with him. Ashley, you've convinced me we need to head over.). (Think we'll do Sunday - Thursday instead of Monday to Friday) // means Griffith Observatory is open and option to just look at view - check out grounds Sunday evening and/or go in and check it out. And leaving Thursday means lighter crowds -- Tues. and Wed. for our Disneyland / California adventure days, missing potential Star Wars crowds. Star War weekends / events should be published before we make reservations too and/or I'll be using freebie Southwest point to fly out and booking refundable hotel, so could tweak my date on that account. It's really just the Paramount or Warner tour I need a set date on I believe. I'll just need to know when I'm going for sure before booking those.

Ohiostate and SMD, Thanks for more insight on the tour differences. With your additional feedback, DS is now torn about which to do. I'd love either and do see TripAdvisor reviews being decent for both, but more love for Warner Brothers. I'll have him look at the websites and pick. Both look very close to where we will be.

SMD -- appreciate the app advice. It's years back (1989), but I got stuck in LA rush hour traffic once, and I still remember how horrible it was. That means I really take everyone's advice about LA traffic very seriously. // Appreciate the thumbs up on the itinerary. // Also SMD I know what you mean about the Disney parks being more popular than even. Attendance and prices are both up which I love as a Disney stockholder, but not so must as a visitor.

We'll have to see what (if any) night time shows are going on. I know DS would love to catch these if they are going on for days we're in the area, and I'll go along with his preferences. Now me (I really love Disney parks / Disney movies / Disney in general and don't mean to be a Disney poop), but I'd actually love it if they didn't have any. I've seen more WDW nighttime spectaculars than anyone should have to sit thought in a lifetime and would love never doing another one lol. But I'm sure another one or two wouldn't kill me, and I imagine that if I ever have grandchildren that I'd be happy to take them too.
