Both of my boys need to make something for the boy scout cake auction - you can't believe what people will pay for an cake made by a boy & his dad! The only idea we have come up with so far is a dirt & worm version of a cake - thinking of making in an angel food pan and having the worms crawl out of the center hole. Any suggestions for the other son?

My DS9 and hubby just did this! It was great fun. My son did a space shuttle cake. It turned out very nice and he won the prize for "most patriotic cake." He got the idea off of www.familyfun.com - go to the cakefinder on that site, they have lots of ideas! The cake that won Grand Prize at his auction was a little hedghog! An oval cake, maybe baked in a bowl, with chocolate icing with a million slivered almonds poking out of its back, well really all over. They made a little face using chocolate chips. It was darling. There was a volcano, huge layered cake, it was really great. Someone made a whole castle out of rice krispy treats, they cut it into slabs and built the castle. It collapsed by the end of the auction though!

I hope your DS's and their Daddy have a great time!

Wow! Does that bring back memories. Several years ago (guess it is 5 already) my son and hubby did a cake that looked like a log cabin. They took the idea from a Disney party book that has a Daniel Boone party and the cake is supposed to be a fort. However, they did it as a cabin and put a little sign saying Camp Gerber (our local Scout camp) on it. DS won first prize with that one.

If you're interested I can find the instructions in my books at home.

A few years ago my youngest DS also won 1st place with his and DH Hot Air Balloon cake we used pretzels for the rope on each side of the balloon and used gum drops to make a design on the balloon and twizzlers to make the basket design. It turned out really cool.

Good luck to both of your boys and let us know how they did.

If you need a very simple idea, you can make a cake that looks like an Oreo cookie. Bake two round layer cakes. Fill the center with white frosting. Frost each layer with chocolate frosting, making sure the white shows as the center.

What great ideas! We decided to keep it really simple & let the boys do all the decorating. DS2 is making a baseball cap cake - originally he was going to decorate it like the caps from Goshen - our local scout camp. Now I think he's just playng with the icing. We baked the head part of the cake in a mixing bowl. The brim is just cut from a 9" round cake. I had to leave the kitchen so it would truly be his. (It's tough to stay out of things.)
DS1 opted for the snake cake. I happen to have a horseshoe shaped cake pan - he broke the horseshoe cake into 4 pieces & put them together in a squiggle pattern. The original pattern suggested doing this with two bundt cakes. I guess he will frost it tomorrw between 5 & 7 because he is already in bed.
