My DH is looking into getting 2-way radios for us at the park as this is our first trip with kids and we know from time to time we may need to head in different directions.

Any suggestions on a certain brand / model you've used in the past that has been reliable (and preferably budget friendly?)

Thanks for any advice!

i find them useless because alot of people have them in the parks and they are on every channel so Id say the best thing to do is cell phones

I found these awesome 2-ways at Target for 17.99 (made by Motorola). They have 15 channels on them. I bought them for my DS5 so he can have something neat, but I'm actually planning on taking them with us to WDW in July because you never know.....

They have a 12 mile radius on them as well.

A bunch of years ago, I bought a set, good brand name and all, and decided its a good way for wife and I to stay in contact with. Bad idea, everyone and their brother has them and the cross talk and other conversations going on made them useless, even with 20 channels and most are line of sight orientated. We never split up in the parks but they did work to some extent around the resort, me in room and wife at the pool or food court. They were just a nuisance and were left in the room when park touring, but we use them at home when wife goes on a walk and I'm around the yard. Guess cell phones are the way to go if you must be in contact but I feel a good watch, set a time and location and just meet. We go on vacation to get away from computers and cell phones and I see too many guests just carrying on normal conversations on cells and are oblivious to other guests. Please be considerate when using cells in attractions and line waiting if you must.

my husband has a NET10 cellphone that he uses when he's on call for work. they sell them everywhere (walmart, target, etc). there is a cheap one that's about $30. (i believe it comes with free 300 mins) the cards are $30 and they are good for 2mos of service and 300 minutes that carry over. we bought one for our trip and are going to give it to my MIL after we're done with it.

we just figured this would be much easier than a two-way radio. and if we miss the call bc we're on a ride we can see that the other person tried to get in touch.

Just make sure you get one with SUB CHANNELS and you dont have to worry about cross talk

I prefer cell phone over radios. You don't have the problem of other people being on your channel (even with multiple channels).

Plus, you can put your cell phone on "vibrate" and put if in your pocket, so that you know if someone's calling you even if the ringer is turned off. Much nicer than a radio that you keep having to switch on and off when in quiet attractions. I also don't like radios because other people are forced to listen to both sides of your conversation, and people tend to shout when using them! To me, they seem much more annoying than cell phones to the other people around you.

I was only thinking about walkie talkies because that way my 5 year old can talk to me when I'm out on my morning jog - he doesn't have a cell phone just yet!! And I plan on keeping one with him at the parks, just in case he does get lost.... Something I don't want to imagine, but you never know....

I got lost at DL when I was 5......and I'm sure kids get lost every day.

There's a special on cell phones at Virgin (free k10 phone when you buy 9.99 of airtime). Big discussion on the Canadian Trip Planning board (see http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=1648835&page=9 for more info).

We were thinking of buying walkie talkies for WDW since we could use them at the cottage as well but 2 cell phones for under $22 with more than enough airtime... I just hope Virgin still has this sale on in April, when we go.
