Suggest A Restaurant For A Plain Jane

My husband loves to try new things, I don't :) I'm a rather picky eater. I tend to like the basic American food (Applebee's, etc) Can you suggest a restaurant? I want to try something new out while we are there, but don't want to spend a lot of money on food I won't eat. I don't eat seafood at all. Chicken is my favorite. I want to do something with just him and I, but don't want to waste money. What do you suggest besides Rainforest Cafe, Planet Hollywood.

I'm with you on this ... may I suggest Restaurant Marrakesh in Morroco (EPCOT)? It sounds exotic, but order the chicken kabobs. They are nicely grilled with a few veggie pieces. Last time I asked for rice, instead of coucous. It has a red sauce that is a little tangy, but no more than an average BBQ sauce from the store. Delish!

You may also want to check our House of Blues (Downtown Disney WEST side -- next to Cirque du Soleil). I can't remember if they have a chicken main dish, but their chicken finger appetizer is enough for a main course. It comes with fries. Very yummy. You can order some sauces for dipping if you want.

Hope this gives you a couple of ideas.

I would NOT suggest Rainforest Cafe for a 'plain jane'. Everytime I have been there, the choices have been more exotic - lots of seasonings, sauces, 'odd' sides, etc. Don't get me wrong - I like the place, but not where I would suggest for 'comfort food'.

In Magic Kingdom, I would suggest Liberty Tree Tavern. Epcot - The Land, or maybe Canada for steak. Whispering Canyon at WIlderness lodge seemed to have a basic, but good sounding menu.

Madi100 this is just MY opinion but I wouldn't choose the Rainforest Cafe or Planet Hollywood while at WDW. Yes, the menus are similar to Applebees which you like but the prices are higher and since you can eat at chains like Applebees at home I think it would be nice to try someplace different since it's a dinner for just the two of you. Here are just some suggestions but make sure you check out the menus here at DIS or at www.wdwig.com.

Epcot

Le Cellier - along with standard meat and potatoes they have Rosemary Garlic Seared Chicken that comes with roasted mushrooms and potatoes. If you don't like mushrooms I'm sure if you tell them they can leave them off the dish.

Rose & Crown - Half Roasted Chicken - served with sage onion stuffing, Yukon gold mashed potatoes, green beans and chicken au jus

Resorts
Kona Cafe at the Polynesian - Oven Roasted Chicken - red skin mashed potatoes, green beans and chicken jus $13.99

I post this at least once a week, and I never know if people believe me, but here goes... :)

My vote is to let the adventurous person pick whereever they want to go, as long as it's one of the nicer sit-downs. (Say, ~$15 or $20 and up per entree.) These restaurants will cheerfully make substitutions, put sauces on the side or leave them in the kitchen entirely, whatever you want. So go to the California Grill, let your DH happily dive into the sushi or more unusual entrees, and just ask your server for a plain grilled steak, or chicken breast, or whatever. I am a very picky eater (I eat some "unusual" things, but there are few things overall that I eat. Drives my mother crazy!) and I've done this I don't know how many times at WDW with no problems and no attitude whatsoever.

Actually, I ordered a lot of my meals off the children's menu. All restaurant's have them and had no problem with me ordering.

Liberty Tree Tavern
Trail's End Buffeteria
50's Primetime

Are you saying this is a date night away from the kids?

Artist Point has a chicken breast and lots of American style food.

This is interesting. I posted on a similar subject further down.

So, I could in theory go into the Californian Grill and order something relatively simple like a filet or chicken dish with veg and no sauces and they would cater to me?

Am I getting this right?

John :bounce:

Thanks for all of the replies. The Rainforest Cafe has chicken fingers that I really enjoy. More than that they have a drink that I really enjoy :) I'm not a big drinker, but I always get one when we are there. I love the atmosphere.

I think I will let him pick a couple places. Yes, this would be no kids. We are taking the kids, but Grandma is also going and serving as babysitter.

Hi there, I used to be a pretty picky eater too. Many of the restaurants will have at least one dish for picky eaters.... a lot of the places like to do goofy things with your steak or chicken, like pile it on top of a huge icky mushroom or some asparagus :) but you can request to not have those if you don't like them, or just remove them yourself which is what I do.
Now here are some of my recommendations

At the MK: Tony's (you can get just regular spaghetti)
MGM: Mama Melrose (if you like pizza, theirs is VERY good, don't be scared by looking at their menu)
Epcot: LeCellier in Canada has great steaks, cheese soup, and yummy breadsticks and none of that came with anything gross when we ate there.
If you want to be a little adventurous, but not too much, if you like Mexican food, I'd suggest San Angel Inn.

Downtown Disney: House Of Blues is excellent and you can get steak there, among other things. You already mentioned Planet Hollywood, which is a great place to go for lunch because they are not crowded then.

Now our all time favorite place to eat is O'Hana at the Polynesian Resort. The food there was out of this world and not scary at all, AND all you can eat. My fiancee and I went there last trip on a really busy night, without a Priority Seating... had a short wait and were given a table that had a direct view of the castle across the lagoon. It made a fun "out of parks" night and after we ate we explored the Polyn., Contemporary, and Grand Floridian.

Have a good time! I highly recommend checking out the menus from Deb Wil's website whenplanning your trip, and most places have the menus posted so you can check it out when you're there, too, to make sure there is one or two entrees you'll like.
