Do any of the restaurants offer sugar free or reduced sugar desserts for diabetics? If so, do you have to let them know in advance? Thank you.

I think all restaurants have at least one option, I'm not sure though.

You do have all the information on why Sugar "free" desserts are worse for you then regular desserts right?

Let me know if you want another point of view.

Hi havinfun,

In answer to your question most sit down or table service restaurants do offer a sugar free dessert, most of the time it is NOT on the menu though. My dad is diabetic so when we were on the dining plan we would just ask at the end of the meal if they offered a sugar free dessert since he couldn't order a dessert off of the menu. Sometime they would just bring him fruit but some of the places actually made sugar free desserts so he could join in the dessert fun. I think every place we ate came up with something for him every time we asked.

They were very nice and accommodating to him and didn't make him feel out of place for not being able to eat a regular dessert.

HTH :goodvibes

As a diabetic, I personally understand that there is a trade off of possibly having a higher higher fat or salt content to forego the sugar. All has to be weighed out as fat causes spikes in sugar, also. BUT it is ALWAYS better to do without sugar.

For the OP, I have always been able to find a satisfying and diabetic alternative. Have fun!

I didn't say anything about fats, salts or any of the above.
What I said was sugar alchhols, which is what they replace the sugar with to make something "sugar free" not taste too bad.

The problem is that SAs are very hard on the digestive track, cause diarrhea in many people. Making this worse, what actually matters most in controlling your sugars is the carb count, not the sugar count (the only difference is sugar might make it spike high faster) - otherwise we could just not eat sugar again, instead we have to watch our content of everything from cake, to rice to baked potatoes. That said, SAs tend to be as bad if not worse on carb count then the "real" thing.

My nutritionist/dietician actually went so far as to help me figure out how to fit small amounts of sugar into my daily diet, and told me to avoid SAs all together.

Fey...OP asked a simple question and I'm sure others on the board would like the same info. I'm also interested in whether a sugar-free dessert has to be requested in advance.

A lecture about the evils of sugar alcohols does not answer OP's question.

And originally I left it up to the OP to decide if they were interested in this information or not. However chefhah quoted me and took me out of context, so at that time I chose to clarify.

I'm not lecturing - it's your body - if you want to risk it, fine. Why should I care? On the other hand, I have the information - most folks are not aware of it... you would be surprised at the myths that float around about diabetes and sugars... so I put the information on the table to use as whomever sees fit. No lecture, just imparting info - what you do from there is up to you. N

Yes, you can have a SF dessert in most table service restaurants. No, it is not usually on the menu. Note the fact that you have a diabetic dining on your ADR and then inform your server at the beginning of the meal that you'll need a SF dessert (sometimes they come from a different kitchen if a resort has more than one restaurant so giving the server advanced warning means that they have plenty of time to make these arrangements in time for your party to all eat dessert together). Some of the buffets have a SF option on the regular dessert bar....others will bring it to you. Many of the counter services have SF jello or (and my diabetic mother loves these) SF brownies. Some SF desserts we have encountered: SF cheese cake, strawberry mousse, lemon cream, chocolate mousse, SF brownies, SF chocolate cake. As for sugar alcohols....most diabetics know how their own bodies respond! Enjoy the fun of being easily included in the dessert orders...Disney is the only place where my mom doesn't have to be left out!

Again, just offering info I swear.
Given that my mom the 10 year diabetic and RN thought she could "eat all the sugar free" stuff she wanted, I do realize that a lot of people just don't know anything more then what the manufacturer's want you to know.

Also given the trouble that a lot of meds (Metroformin for one) cause to the colon and it's related issues, some may not make a connection between certain foods and colon issues.

When calling in for an ADR I let them know I am a diabetic and then again at check in time. I have had the chef at many places -Buffets included- walk me thru the menu or buffets and make suggestions. counter service meals I just have to wing it -some places have SF jello and I don't like the SF brownies buts thats me. I do like the SF strawberry shortcake ;) I have had chefs offer to make me something SF for dessert or modify a meal to make it more diabetic friendly for me but then there are times I save up and have a tiny bit of something bad as long as I eat good all day I find I can have a nibble of a pastry in france :cloud9:

just a note to the diabetics out there- the first aid places in all the parks are awesome to test at and they can store your insulin for you. ( it's a bit of a walk to Epcots First aid station tho..)

Thanks for the info emma'smom and sandi...dh will be very happy not to be left out of the yummy Disney dessert.

Thank you for letting me know about the deserts. It will be a "surprise!" each night. I guess if my husband watched his carbs for the entree he could get away with a regular desert. I think that they might be Mucho carbs though. Anyway thanks again.

fey spirit-

I understand what you are talking about. I am not a diabetic but trying to loose weight. Many of the SF foods are high in other such as fat. Also the corn syrup stuff doesn't satisfy appetites. I know you were being helpful. Thanks for your input.

Sandisuze,

Thank you for your practical advice. I need to start writing all this down. I know I will print all the answers I got so I won't forget. We are not going until August.
