Sorry if this is silly, but I would rather avoid artificial sweeteners.....

Are the sugar free desserts unsweetened, or is another sweetener added?:confused3

Agave:cool:thumbsup2...Aspertame::scared1:...see where this is going?

Thanks for any input you may have!

:cheer2:

Count on them having a diabetic-friendly sweetener in them.

Since experts disagree about the safety of diabetics using agave, WDW generally wouldn't use that approach. Indeed, it would be most reasonable to expect that they'd use one of the less expensive sweeteners, which has a longer history of being safe for diabetics.

Actually artificial sweeteners can sometimes raise a diabetic's blood sugar as much as sugar, and if the sweetener is a sugar alcohol can have digestive system side effects as well. It varies by individual.

It depends on the person and the sweetener. So expect Disney to use the most conservative approach.

I am diabetic, and I plan to avoid the "sugarfree" desserts because unless they are packaged and I can read a label I won't know for sure exactly what kind of sweetener is in them.

You might get more information in the Disabilities folder.

My husband being a diabetic, generally avoided all dessert items at WDW - - unless it was something he had planned into his diet. For the most part, he preferred to have just a forkful of something really good (if it was a buffet) and be careful of other foods he ate. I found that a lot of the no-sugar added desserts still had plenty of carbs...after all, no sugar added apple pie or even a pudding, still has carbs and can spike him up - he would rather just have quality over quantity.

The one dessert that I had was at Grand Floridian Cafe and it was a no-suggar added fresh berry/gelatin (but really really top notch quality) triangle. I know that I tasted artifical sweetener in it - - I would guess (just a guess on my part of eating so many different ones) aspertame. This was a good choice for diabetics who can handle artifical sweetner and can count the fruit carbs (raspberry and blueberry).

Good luck!

I agree with the taste of something really good.
The no sugar added desserts don't always taste that great....and a lot of them still have carbs through flour and such.

I am not diabetic...I just thought, perhaps the no sugar options were for healthy options...not sugar management...I am rather PRO sugar and ANTI artificial sweetners for my DD and myself.

...I actually would be THRILLED with a big bowl of berries, unsweetened whipped cream, and an optional sugar packet:lmao:...it doesn't have to be some complicated compote/mousse/foam extravaganza. (a piece of chocolate on the side doesn't hurt either!)

The chocolate fondues are seemingly the best healthy options!;)

No sugar added desserts at Disney are typically very sweet, usually a familiar dessert made with sugar substitutes. They are not plain fresh fruit with sugar on the side (but agree that would be great.) When I've asked, I've been told they use aspartame, sucralose and some sugar alcohols, too...just depends on the type of dessert it is (I've read that aspartame doesn't do well in recipes requiring high heat.)

The sugar free option is usually a "regular" dessert that couldn't be made without sweetener - cheesecake, apple tarte tatin with ice cream, pots de cremes, cakes, etcs. So my guess is they have to have something like splenda in them.

You can always ask the server and they can find out from the chef.

I am diabetic and I avoid most of the "no sugar added" desserts no matter where I go. The carb count is usually pretty high and the chance that they have used one of the sweeteners that will upset my digestive system isn't worth taking, especially when I am on vacation.

I agree that you are not likely to see agave at Disney since its safety in diabetics is not certain. And the no sugar added desserts seem to be aimed at the diabetic crowd.

I usually plan to have just a little bit of dessert - I'll have a bit of my husband or daughter's. Satisfies the sweet tooth without over indulging.
