Please post your experiences with menu substitutions while on the basic dining plan...for example, can you substitute broccoli for the swiss chard at Kona? Potatoes for rice? What have you substituted for what, and did you get any hassle from the waitstaff? Please/thanks.

we sub stuff all the time, and never had an issue, as long as the sub item was on the menu too. like subbing fries for broccoli, or potatoes for the thing at rose and crown (can't remember what it was)

Dining plan or not, you can always substitute anything at Disney World. If we couldn't do that, my husband would never eat at a table service place.

When you look at any Disney menu, look at EVERYTHING. This dish comes with vegetables which you hate (using my husband's example) but they have fries since they have a kids menu? Change to fries. This shrimp scampi comes with rice which you hate (using my example) but another dish has a baked potato? Change it. Don't like a sauce that is mentioned? Ask for the food to be served "naked".

With a husband who asks for his salad to be served without tomatoes, onions, cucumbers, and any other kind of vegetable ever known to man AND to ask for extra dressing, you can do whatever you want.

It's Disney World. Ask.

The poor servers at WDW have to deal with a lot of "asks" from me! *LOL* Most are very good, as long as it's a simple substitution or a request to eliminate an item. Occasionally ran into difficulties, but I think it's because they are accustomed to serving things in a specific manner and it sometimes doesn't make sense that someone want it "plain"! *sigh*

There has apparently been some success with substitution of side dishes at various restaurants.

The one thing it is certain you will not be able to do on the basic dining plan is substitute an appetizer for your dessert.

My daughter was able to get corn rather than greens with her fried Chicken at the 50's prime time

Not interested in doing that; planning to pay out of pocket for any appetizers that we get!

First time I heard about substituting was from a server at Kona. This was a few years back and our server at Kona mentioned that you can make substitutes even at 'Ohanas. Kona and 'Ohana share a part of the kitchen. So, a few nights later, DD asked for, and received a huge bowl of broccoli with her dinner at 'Ohana (she didn't like any of the side dishes on menu, can't remember right now what they offered then).
