Substitutions at Disney restaurants?

Are the onsite restaurants willing to make substitutions for side items? I hate all variations on mashed potatoes  and many of the menu items I would be interested in list them as sides. We'll be dining at several restaurants this trip, including places like Narcoosee's.

Thanks for any information you can provide!

Narcosees was willing to substitute scallops for lobster tail in the entree so I don't think that they would have a problem with different side orders. My DH also got a fruit cup for dessert at Mama Melrose which wasn't even on the adult menu. So I think that most of the restaraunts won't have a problem with you wanting substitutions.

Well, somebody recently reported not being able to substitute asparagus for cream cheese mashed potatoes at Le Cellier - but I think that's because while both items are available as side orders at additional cost, the asparagus isn't an accompaniment with any menu item (and yes, there IS a difference). But I've been able to get risotto instead of mashed potatoes at a different restaurant.

As long as the item you wish to sub is already served with a different entree at that location, there should be no reason you can't sub.

My husband positively, absolutely detests mashed potatoes. It's a long story but he hates them.

He never has had a mashed potato on this plate in his life (after second grade). If it's offered with his meal, he substitutes for it all the time. And yes, look at ALL the side dishes on the menu. If it's listed anywhere, you can get it. And don't forget good ol' fries. They are on the kids menus so they are always there as an option. Many times, rice is available but not on the menu.

We have found this works outside of Disney World as well. My husband is great with the "may I ask you a question first?" before we order.

Unless you are dealing with a food allergy..........my daughter has several food allergies and the chef comes out and talks to me about the menu and what she can and can not eat.....she has always been able to get a veggie instead of the fries at the TS, while at the CS they will give her apple slices or applesauce.
