Substitute Teachers - how bad is it?

Great feedback. My district is actually my entire county - almost 40,000 students. I happen to be the proud parent of a middle schooler so I feel like I can relate to them. I have been pleasantly surprised with his MS experience so far.
I will definitely prepare a "bag of tricks" ie: busy work - mainly fun stuff. The discipline thing will be key.

Keep 'em coming!

My district is pretty large (around 12K students) so its not as large as yours. I am pretty busy almost everyday even in the smaller district.

You will probably have to turn jobs down like I do!

I'm considering trying subbing in our area too, but a friend of mine told me that after tax, you only make $45 for the day! Does that sound right?
Rate where I am is way higher than that. $91/day for regular ed teacher and paras and $107 for ESE teachers. We just recently got a raise in the rate. I don't know if I would bother for $45. Of course in those counties they don't require a QA for interpreters so I would probably go full time as an interpreter and get my EIE

Gotta love those Maryland 'districts!' :rotfl: When I moved to MD from PA I was like 'your school district is what???'

That's about right for the county I live in. For a day sub, you make $55 per day if you don't have a college degree ($65 per day if you do have a degree). As a long-term sub, you make $85 per day (you have to have a degree to be a long-term sub) after the first five days of your assignment.

That's why I began tutoring instead. I make that in just a couple of hours rather than slaving for a whole day!

Also, for us, long term assignments get paid as a first year teacher salary.

Wow - I'm amazed there are places you can sub without a college degree. We have "emergency subs" that have degrees but no teaching certificate, but they can only get called if all the certs on the list have been called first. We have too many unemployed teachers and haven't used emergency subs in several years. Even subbing is competitive around here.

Here in NJ you can sub if you have 60 college credits or more. So basically if you are a college student and finished your first two years, you can sub. Obviously it looks better if you have a bachelors or even an associates degree.

However, in my district you can only work 18 days in the same assignment if you do not have a NJ teachers certification. If you have your cert, you can get the long term assignments in which you get a prorated pay of a first year bachelors salary. (if you have your masters you get the masters rate)

Several years ago our district was paying $70 per day for subs. I assume it has gone up since then. I will find out prior to accepting any positions.

Lewdyan - thanks for the links. Can't wait to check them out.
