Substitute for DVR?

Yes, it only records one show at a time but you can watch any other show through your tv at that same time (you just can't watch it through the player).

Ok, more questions.

So, can you watch one show and record another? I assume it only records one show at a time, unlike DVRs that can record two at a time????

Thanks,

Dawn

Am I the only one who still uses my VCR?:rotfl:

absolutely not! :thumbsup2 we still use our VCR to record shows 2-3 times per week! but, unfortunately, it's getting harder and harder to find blank tapes, so we're looking for an alternative.

My DVD Recorder is set up with my satelite dish. There is probably a better way of doing it but my TV has to be on the channel you want to record.

I have it up in my bedroom and I leave that TV set for Disney Junior. The satelite only does two TV's so I record the shows and burn them to DVD's and then take them downstairs for the daycare children to watch while I heat up lunches and put them on the table (about 5-10 minutes). They only get that much TV time.

If I watch something in my bedroom I change the channel back to PHD when I'm done.

I can set the Recorder to tape it every day, M-F, just a certain day a week, and I think there is another strange one M-Sat, or something like that. I can tell it to skip once, so if I know a show is a repeat I'm not recording it again.

I like that it comes with a few different menu selections for when you burn your DVD.

I have a Sony one that I bought a few years ago. I bought it after Boxing Day and it was an open box sale. The only thing that was wrong with it was the batteries in the remote were dead.

I have made up DVD's for my niece's birthdays to give out as party favors. The parents love them.

I still use mine, too! :thumbsup2
I am actually calling the cable company today to see if there is any way to trim the cable bill and add on a DVR though. I'm sure I will have to have the kids program it for me :rotfl:, but it will be great for the nights when there are multiple shows on that I like.

I have a DVD recorder also...paid about $150 for it at Best Buy a year ago...but boy was it difficult to find!

I have it set up through my cable box...but my television has different settings...I think its called source. So I can switch between DVD, AUX, TV, etc. so I can record to disc while changing the source to TV.

I set it to record on a schedule. I get 4 hours/disc. I also buy the -RW discs so I can erase and use the disc again.

I can get to be a pain to remember to set the timer, but I find that I record what I want and its nice to keep it to disc if I really like it....

I can't stand watching things on my computer. In fact, most of the time I watch TV while surfing.

I have watched a couple of things I didn't have another way to watch, but I much prefer to have our large TV for viewing shows.

I have already cut satellite but I do have Netflix through a Roku for viewing as well as a rooftop antenna.

Many (most?) newer computers have an HDMI port. You can connect your computer to your TV set. Some people have a "media PC" next to their TV set.

Right, several have mentioned this before, but I don't want my computer hooked up to my TV.

We have a TV on each floor.....basement, main floor, and upstairs. Our computers (other than my laptop) are in the office on the main floor way in the back of the house.

I like to surf the net WHILE I watch TV. I use my laptop for this.

Now, I could go and buy a whole new computer, but that seems like an overly expensive option that will not be happening.

You can find Tivo Series 3 with lifetime subscriptions on eBay for under $300. Series 3 are HD capable by over the air or cable card. The new Tivo Premiere go for $800 with lifetime service so Series 3 is a great solution. (I have 2 of them)

Comcast will rent you a cable card for $1.50 per month. The first cable card is free. You can also use an antenna and record HD that way.

If you don't need HD the Series 2 Tivo's with lifetime are slightly cheaper. (They don't have a digital tuner, so you may have limitations that require you to have an adapter or box from the cable company)
